    Anyone prefer original Buckhorns?

I like them just fine, I just changed the grips for thicker foam padded ones because the original ones were kind of small and gave my throttle hand cramps.

    hybrid of xs400 and bolt

Well i wouldn't cut up my Maxim for a millions bucks.... ok well maybe, but i don't have a bolt yet and wouldn't cut it up either... The thing is, Yamaha has already done a cafe and scrambler version of these, it would be just cool to see a throwback version to the maxim generation. The XJ550...

    hybrid of xs400 and bolt

I like my maxim and I like the new bolt. So if i could combine them this is what I would get. it's a crude MS paint pic but it gives you an idea.

New member here, 83 XS400 Maxim

Get yourself an in line fuel filter to help keep the carbs clean. that really is a nice clean one, they usually look a bit rougher than that.

    XS400.com Software Update

Not really a bug but i noticed you no longer have the garage section divided by topics (carbs, suspension, how to's, etc) will that me comming back? I always liked that feature especially if I wanted specific info i would go by topic and read the latest post.

    Is this bike all original?

Yes, that would appear to be a well maintained(if the picture is recent) 1982 XS400 RJ also known as XS400 SECA. It has a DOHC engine and a 6 speed transmission. As far as the colour is concerned, I can not confirm or deny if that was the original paint.

    Carb kit confusion..

All right pro's... the ball is in your court. I have been looking for a carb kit to replace some of the needles/jets/o-rings that are worn out/bad shape. I have seen carb kits for the 77-82 sohc's and a few for the "dohc's".... i put that in quotes because they say they are for 82-82...

    Can't lurk any longer

Yes please enlighten us.... I have always hated the rear end and had thought of something like that but wasn't sure what it would look like.

DOHC hard to start, but runs great when it's warm?

the jet sizes are supposed to be different because the airbox opening is on on side... one side actually gets more air flow..... i will have to look in the book for the values...

PO says he converted to DOT 5, how do i check ?

Hi, i googled "dot 5" cuz to be honest i had never heard of it.... I found several other forums (car racing, hot rodding, motorcycles), -that say dot 5 gives you a spongier feel when applying the brakes. -that mixing dot 5 with dot 3,4 or 5.1 is bad. (3,4,5.1 are glycol based, 5 is silicone...

Bought a project, looking for info.

Since it doesn't look like the bike was rear-ended cuz the rest of the rear end looks good. I think the chain came off and got wrapped around the adjuster, that's why it's all bent and the sprocket as well. that's just my 2cents.

    New Guy, New Project

I was not aware of that..... I will see if the service manual gives the dimensions of the sprocket on the rear of the seca wheel... that way you might have an idea as to how big you can go...

    New Guy, New Project

The 82-83 DOHC xs400 SECA has an 18 inch rim. So as far as a direct bolt on it's a go. (same frame info in the book) Keep in mind the SECA has a six gear transmission and a 38t sproket on the rear wheel. I don't know how that translates to the 5 gear transmission as far as RPM, Speed and actual...

    Damaged 83 Speedo, why? replace?

Whatever you do, do not try to remove the needle base from the shaft. I tried that once and it made it worse... the shaft is fixed to a wound up spring that is fragile and any bend/alteration to the shaft will cause bad readings or like in my case prevent the needle from moving at all. You will...
