    SG model caliper rebuild

Ahh ok, if ever re-using a copper washer for either banjo bolts, fuel lines, or sump plugs then you should really anneal them. i.e. make the copper soft again as it goes hard over time and work hardens under compression. Its really easy to do, just heat them up till they glow red hot, with a...

Another oil filter thread. Can't get the cover off

Glad you got the filter off ok, but what did you use the rubber mallet for? As to the left hand drill, I tried using one to loosen a snapped exhaust stud in a Suzuki Rf900 head, didnt do the trick, so I just drilled it out with regular drills of increasing size till it broken through the...

    SG model caliper rebuild

It cant hurt to strip the master cylinder and clean out any gunk. Just be careful not to damage anything and only apply suitable grease, if anything, while rebuilding. Not sure what you mean by top seal so cant comment? Do you know the trick about annealing the copper washers on the banjo bolt...

    SG model caliper rebuild

Based upon part numbers, of the seal kits as the parts diagram don't list the pistons seperately, I deduce that the pistons are the same diameter, I imagine they are 47mm. Most xs650's from 77-81 the xs750 D, 2D, E (various years) and xs400 77 -79 all have part number 1J3-W0047-00 80-81...

Looking for ideas on upgrading Ignition

Hiya Drewpy, maybe its a terminology error I've made, people seem to call modern bike ignition control units CDI's so I presumed they actually were cdi's which would fit in with modern high rpm engines? Guess they are all actually digital transistor ignitions? Thanks for the info Chris, I did...

    Carb sync tool?

I've had a proper 4 gauge vacuum balance tool for years and been worth every penny I paid for it (I did get it cheap tho). Was always balancing my 90s sports bikes and mates bikes too as they did seem to go outta sync when ridden hard. The one I have has a valve on each input to the gauge to...

    Wanted - Fork stanchions

Hiya, I think I've got a pair from my 81 special kicking around somewhere, it may take some time to find them though? Just to confirm the stanchions are the legs at the bottom which the wheel spindle goes through and the calipers bolt too? And not the fork tubes? If they are what you...

Looking for ideas on upgrading Ignition

Hiya, will you need the coils? The points and TCI should both use inductive coil types? I thought it was only CDI ignition systems that needed different coils because of the capacitor discharge voltage? Maybe I'm wrong as don't know everything ;) do they have slightly different resistance or...

Another oil filter thread. Can't get the cover off

Hiya, haven't been stuck on a filter bolt before but been stuck with many a thread in my time! (Not that I'm really old or anything!:)) One trick is to tighten it first and then loosen it although in this position it might not work best. Impact/shock you have tried, sometimes in other...

Hi all, have been busy in my garage, although I'm never allowed to spend as much time in there as I'd like, the missus says I have to do something called working and that I have to pay the 'mortgage' whatever that is??? Cleaned up the Aprilia caliper and ordered silicon grease and some...
