    Wanted - Oversize pistons for 78 400XS

I've posted pics on here of my 78 XS400 that I put a small fortune in trying to make a neat Bobber style bike. Unfortunately, the guy that did the engine work must have honed the cylinders too much and installed standard rings. The bike was using oil as fast as I could put it in. I have a...

First time buyer... Is this a good deal???

I'd steer waaaaay clear at that price. The guy sounds like an advertising exec. I could make a list almost identical to that for my bike that I've sunk $2500+ into. Unfortunately, it doesn't run and probably never will. It's sitting in a shop waiting for parts that can't be found. Take that...

    Bad experience

It's been some time since I posted on here, I had some pics of my project before and after. Just need to share my horror story and vent a bit. Main problem is probably the fact that I'm not a bike mechanic so I have to pay labor. I do normal maintenance on the bike and on my vehicles but...

    chain oil

Not sure about the chain bar oil but I used cycle chain oil and heavy oil for years. Problem was, I got sick of the back rim being oily and also my pants leg. It was bad when I was running a chain guard but now without one it's a real mess. Thanks to someone on here I started using Dupont...

How many miles on your xs?

!978 with 31,000 miles. Rode it for years back and forth to work 35 miles round trip. Never had any problems. Then when I took it to a guy for restoration ( had been sitting for 25 yrs) he pulled the top end and reringed it. Not sure why unless it had poor compression. The only thing that...

    Long Trip

Excellent advice! I'd love to take mine on a trip like that but lack the guts. The breakdown insurance might help with the peace of mind though. Also, my tired old arse wouldn't take it I'm afraid.

    New paint job

I used Bondo Lightweight body filler #262ES by 3M. Works great, sets quickly and sands easily. Got it at Walmart. Good luck!

    New paint job

Thanks, Drewpy, I consider that high praise from the creator of "Speed Sh1t", a fantastic looking bike!

    New paint job

I didn't clear coat it although you could. Just a bunch of light coats, some 1000 grit and then some 2000 and some polishing compound followed with wax. I did it by hand rather than a buffer just to see if it would be good enough. It feels good to me, has a nice glossy finish and I'm sure is...

    Longest Ride...

When I rode daily to work I remember going through a massive rainstorm with lightning, thunder and torrential downpour. I drove about 35 and got completely through it. Sounds nuts but I almost turned around and went back through again. Something about the connection to nature and the elements...

    New paint job

Actually, I didn't. Both sides were sanded and primed where I filled in the brackets for the Yamaha logo. I just roughed up the remaining area and primed it. I usually have a problem with cans as I tend to put too much at a time on and get runs. This time I just put on a couple light coats...

    New paint job

Here's my attempt at a rattle can paint job. Didn't turn out too bad. 8 coats of heat resistant engine paint, some 1000 and 2000 grit paper and some polishing compound. Smooth as a baby's bottom. Gotta change those bars, though.

Put your opinion on the oil I'm using

I don't recall what oil I used when I rode back in the late 70's and early 80's but I'm pretty sure it was just automotive oil. Never had a problem in 30K miles. That being said, I never offer an opinion on Religion, politics or motor oil. You can lose friends quickly.

    idiot moment

I would definitely put the spring back in, it's needed to keep the filter against the engine block. I'd just carefully pull off the filter and save the oil that comes out and put it back when you're finished. Don't feel too dumb, I couldn't remember which way the filter went in until it...

    Winter fuel

The fuel may be more critical on a two stroke engine. I have all kinds of starting problems with my sno-blower, weed whacker, mantis, etc. The dealer tells me not to mix more fuel than I can use in 30 days. They blame just about everything from poor starting to the national debt on lousy...

    Which oil?

I bought 2 quarts of Mobil One V-twin 20w-50 to use after the break in. Supposed to be designed for wet clutches, trannies, etc. At $10.50 a quart I won't be changing it often as I don't put many miles on. Seems like the extra protection can't hurt. Us old geezers have a few extra bucks...
