Need Photo or Diagram of Starter Switch

My starter button was a little wonky so I decided to take it apart and see if a clean up was in order. I think it has been like this for quite a while. The tiny screw seems to thread back into the hole nice and snug but I am not sure what the exact orientation of that little plate should be...

    Plugs Fouling With Carbon

Bike is an 82 Xs400SJ Heritage Special Both plugs are fouling considerably with carbon after only a couple of hundred miles. When this happens the bike does not want to idle, just drops down and dies at a stop, but pulls strong otherwise and doesn't have a miss. After a quick clean up...

Wants to Die at Idle - Where Do I look First

It's an 82 Heritage Special. Bike ran good this morning on a 30 mile secondary highway trip. Started fine when I left to come home but at idle it runs a little rough and wants to die out. When I pull up to a stop sign for example the engine comes back to idle for a second or two, then the RPM...

82 Heritage Special - Which Wheels Are Correct?

OK guys here's one for the purists. I have an 82 XS400SJ Heritage Special that has the aluminum rims with front disc and rear drum brakes. I also had a parts bike that had a VIN within 200 numbers of mine that was equipped the same. Both bikes were sold new in Canada. I have also seen on both...

How Tight Should Exhaust be at Engine?

Finally got around to getting a pair of exhaust gaskets for my 82 XS400SJ. Just how much do I tighten the nuts on the studs? Do I just get them as tight as I reasonably can in order to crush the gaskets into shape? Is there a lbs./ft. torque value that I should be using?

How do you haul your bike?

Any time I have transported a bike in my pickup truck in the past I have stuck the front wheel up against the front of the truck box, tied the handle bars crossways to the truck tie downs, tied the front wheel so it won't kick out sideways, and put two ties on the rear for good measure. I have...

    82 XS400SJ's - Engine Sprocket Hand Tight

So there I was last night undoing the final bits and pieces on both bikes preparing to do the engine swap. When I got to the engine sprockets to remove the chains on the one bike it looked like it may have been off before because the washer crimping was rather ragged but the other one appeared...

Engine Removal - Tips & Tricks

I am approaching the point where it will soon be time to pull the engines on my 2 bikes so I can do the swap. I have been standing there looking at them and trying to decide the best method. If they were small block Chevy's I would have no problem :) but since I have never done this type of work...

82 Heritage Special - Can't Get Starter Out

So I decided to have a look at the starter on my parts bike before I pulled the engine to do an engine swap. I have the alternator cover off and the starter is disengaged from the chain and is loose in the hole but no matter which way I twist or turn it I can't get it out. It just does not seem...

    "Hi" From New Member

I just want to say “Hi” from Waterdown Ontario. I stumbled across this forum a couple of weeks ago and it appears to be an excellent resource for everyone that is using it. I have an XS400SJ that I bought a couple of years ago for a song. It had been over 25 years since I had a motorcycle, the...
