    possible longer fork swap

I'm just about done changing my little guy into a proper 70's chopper but I need one thing - longer forks. Can anyone tell me the stock length of the uppers? I couldn't find it on google and I don't want to pull them off and measure yet. I also found a set of 34 inch 33mm fork tubes from a...

    New headlight wiring question

Just got a new bates headlight for my 81 Special II. New headlight has white, blue, green and yellow wire, stock has black, yellow and green. Any idea what goes where? Wiring is really not my thing.

    Starter stopped working

Switched handlebars a couple weeks ago. I always kickstart but thought since I had a fully charged new battery I would try the electric start. Hit the button, nothing. No click, no anything. Still kicks just fine. Any ideas?

    A different turn signals question

I'm getting rid of the front turn signals, but want to run the rears and double them as the brake and running lights. A) is this possible and B) I should just be able to remove the front signals without it screwing up the rear signals, right? Pretty sure that wiring runs in parallel, but I'm...

    Pod filter carb tuning

FWIW, I have emgo 54mm pods and emgo shorties on wrapped headers. I'm using 42.5 pilots, 135 mains, 1 up on the needle and 3 turns out on the idle mix. Seems to be running great, plugs are not showing lean and I've had the RPM to 7500 with no backfire. Mine is an '81. Hope this is helpful to...

Second mod done and carbs tuned!

Ego pod filters are on, crankcase breather on and carbs are running great. Got the spark plugs a nice tan, I'll post pics when I have a chance. Now the bike sounds great and runs! Next up, either the resprocketing or handlebars, whichever gets here first.

    First mod complete!

after a year of thinking about what to do, i've finally finished the first mod. new exhaust is wrapped and on. i had to use '79 headers and nut rings because the '81 exhaust was one piece and too nice to hack up. it sounds great and to my surprise runs fine, no backfiring or wheezing. i'm...

    Grrr...center stand bolt

Trying to remove the center stand and I got the "drivers side" bolt out fine. The other side, however will not come out. The nut comes off but the bolt won't slide out. It does rotate with the center stand when the center stand is moved up and down. Looks like the outside washer is rusted pretty...

Wanted - Exhaust nut rings for '78 head pipes

Yamaha calls them nut rings, it's the ring that attaches the headpipes to the engine. I need them ASAP to get my new exhaust set up attached. Thanks!

Looking for "how to" on drilled sprocket cover

Somewhere on the Global Intraweb I saw a write up of a how to on drilling a sprocket cover for the xs400. I swear to God I have done every type of search on here, bing, google, yahoo and the neighbor down the street trying to find it again. (Mental note - bookmark things that look interesting)...

    First highway ride

After a couple of months on the city streets, we ventured out onto the freeway for the first time tonight. I am pretty impressed with what the little guy can do. Nice even pull, quick acceleration. Only got up to 65, a lot of wind makes me a little nervous about being thrown around. I think...

Wanted - 2 exhaust nut rings

I realized I couldn't use my existing ones without cutting up the stock exhaust, which I really don't want to do in case someone else can use it. So I need to aquire a couple. OEM part no. 2L0-14612-01-00. Also, I assume flanges are reusable, is that correct? What about the gaskets? Thanks!

    Proper intro

Thought it was about time to give a proper hello. I bought this bike a couple of months ago. The PO actually cleaned the carbs and it runs well, just a little lean. I plan on pods and shorties. I didn't want to cut the original exhaust, so I scored a pair of '78 headers for $10 of fleabay...

idle mix screw - short version

So I will be rejetting for the new exhaust and pods this weekend and I was looking for the idle mix screw. Apparently mine have recessed screw way down in the carb. It doesn't look like they can be adjusted, the manual says they are non adjustable. 2 questions - 1. Can they be replaced with...

    Best pods?

About ready to order pods and I'm wondering if cheap priced pods = cheap made pods. Anyone have recommendations? I like the price on no names but I'm a little worried about the quality.

    VIN question

So I'm a little confused. My bike is badged (sidecovers and tank) as an '81 Special II or XS400SH, but the VIN starts with 4R5, which should be a Standard or XS400H, right?
