My Cafe Racer Build (and Re-Build)

It was just a random one bought off of Ali Express, didn't have a specific application or motorcycle applied to it. I think it's a pretty universal sensor size for cheap Asian scooters and motorcycles.

My Cafe Racer Build (and Re-Build)

It's a gear position sensor that feeds into a gear position indicator. Not a plug and play job, the shift drum had to be modified to move the original position of the neutral pin. But once everything is lined up and in place, it works well. On my recent builds I have moved on to non-contact hall...

Hey all! Long time no talk...

Well the bikes themselves aren't cheap these days, but the parts are plentiful and not expensive. Since the Banshee crowd is still so big, there are TONS of aftermarket goodies still in production for these motors.

Hey all! Long time no talk...

Just stopping by to see how the XS400 world is doing. Seen a few at bike shows this year (horribly done, mind you) and it gave me the idea to come check up on everyone. No longer into the XS scene, but I've got quite a few projects on my hands that you might like. My daily ride. Up to 60hp on...

My Cafe Racer Build (and Re-Build)

Damn you guys used up all my photo bucket bandwidth? That's nuts. Yeah I was going to buy it back from iaai, made an account and everything, but the day of bidding I was busy with my mobilization training and couldn't be bothered. The accident messed up my leg pretty bad, still have some...

    Newbie checking in

125 forks work well, it just so happens that the geometry of the Aprilia parts blend with the 400. There is a lot more to it than just a bearing swap, so read up a bunch. 4 or 5 of us have done it and documented on this site. If you are keeping the XS rims, you will need to rig up axle spacers...

Chinese front master cylinder and clutch perch?

The switches on the aftermarket levers should wire up and work just like the stock setup, at least mine did. Make sure you keep an eye on the clutch side, some of the levers have horrible machining where the clutch cable bends.

    Ignition coil wire colors

Having them swapped will still allow the motor to turn over, but it will backfire as you try to start it. It's one of those things where you know exactly what you did wrong when it happens :)

    carb swap

5 year old post. But I'll give you this- stock carbs work fine. Mine ran perfectly fine with no airbox and open exhaust. Needed minimal adjustment. They will work even better on a stock airbox and exhaust though. I don't know why people have issues with them. You'll get more headaches with...

    MmmBoost's '78 XS400 Cafe Project

Just to let you know from experience- With the rear jacked that high, and the front that low on the tubes, you will have a horrible handling bike. It will have very nervous/twitchy turning characteristics. The bike will also have poor straight line stability at higher speed. Be ready for death...

    Throw them in the garbage.

    Restoration - frame stickers?

We have talked about it before on here. It is illegal in all states to modify the original vin plate. So you technically can't take them off and put them back on. If one is damaged or unreadable, the only legal way to do it is to go through your states agency and get a new vin plate issued by...

    Permanent Magnet Alternator Mod

You can use the banshee parts if you modify everything to fit, but the question would be why? The stock system is better. If you use the banshee parts you would not need the crank trigger unless you decide to switch to a wasted spark cdi. You wouldn't be able to use a banshee/rz cdi since the...

always the battery.. how to start?

Yeah 4 cell will get killed quick with e-start. The bike should start cold with the choke on one/two kicks or blip of the starter. If it's not doing that, you need to sort out the carbs. Or else you'll just keep killing batteries.

What's normal voltage drop for key on?

You can take the ignition switch apart and get it all clean. It's pretty straight forward when you see all the pieces.

What's normal voltage drop for key on?

What does the voltmeter read when you are going down the road at 4000rpm? Also be aware the cheap multimeters can throw off numbers by quite a bit. You may be right where you need to be.

    Carburetor upgrade questions

vm28 or 30's will be sized better for the XS. Will be easier to jet properly. Be prepared to spend lots of $$$ on jets of varying sizes and different needles with many tapers if you want to get them right. Slides sometimes need to be replaced with a different cutout to get off idle throttle...

    78 xs 400 E rebuild and modify

Just do it the old school way if you are trying to get them off, I promise you won't break them. Place head valves down on thick cardboard(important), place appropriately sized deep-well socket over cup, smack top with hammer. One good whack is all it will need, the spring and cup will compress...

    Exhaust Change?

Because CV carbs don't like them. They were designed to work with an airbox. Basically, you will never get more power/performance out of them with 'pod' filters on them. Just isn't possible, no matter what the hipsters tell you. Only carbs that work well with open air are cable operated slides...

'78 XS 400 with Aprilia forks

It is much easier to use an Aprilia caliper. There are quite a few modern discs that will work with our rims and the Aprilia caliper. You still will have to shim the disc (away from the hub) in order to get it perfect in the caliper. I used a combination of spacer plate and shims on the caliper...
