Missing rear brake, drum or disc?

my advice is to get another parts bike, if you're buying parts separately you will spend all your cash and it's never going to be worth it.. rear brake is a drum on almost all the xs400 models, only a few seca's (dohc bike, you have a sohc) were fitted with a disc at the rear. Not to worry...

    Front Fork - Too Soft

havent been on the forum for about a year, but I used to have a DOHC bike. :) Mine had about 95k km on it, and when I changed the fork oil I think it might have been still in there from the factory. There was too little in them, and it vaguely resembled something that used to be oil. Fresh 10W...

    Issues after Riding in rain

the crankcase breather tube should be connected. It puts any fumes from the crankcase into the air intake, which is good for the environment (no dirty oily fumes into the atmosphere) and good for the bike; it's basically free fuel and it also keeps everything inside the carbs lubed up a little...

    DOHC Starts sometimes, not others...

Yes it's possible for the battery to crank the engine, but not produce a good spark. Check the voltage on the battery when full, should be about 12.6 - 12.8 volts. While cranking it shouldn't drop below 12. If you get it running you should have a little higher voltage, in the 13.5- 14.5 V range...

    New xs 400 rider

be careful with that, if you're running pods and open pipes without changing the jetting, you're definitely running lean. Surprised it even goes to 60 at this point, but you could seriously damage the engine if you keep running it like that. Overheating is no joke ;) Get some bigger jets, do a...

Looking To See What Price To List At

Have to agree with levdir (although my market is far away) You may want to take the fairing off, it's not a stock feature and many people (including myself) don't think it fits well. also, has it been sitting in a garage for 20 years doing nothing, or did someone recently clean it and tuned...

Proud owner of a "brand new" Maxim

the DOHC owner's manual will work for you. The bike in the picture (seca) doesn't look like it, but it is mechanically about 95% the same as your maxim. congrats on the nice new bike :)

What did you do with your XS today?

Watched this video on carbs by far the best explanation of carbs I've seen ever  wish I would have watched that before buying the xs400

Starting problems when engine is cold.

Welcome :) did you watch bcware's videos on the carbs? could still be that you missed a passage somewhere, I know I did on my first few tries.. Did you set the float height? Carb sync? Have you adjusted the valve clearances? How's the compression?

    First highway ride

a bigger bike  it's a tradeoff in the end, you can lower your highway rpms at the cost of acceleration, or vice versa

    Synchronizing carbs

you don't need to mount it to a board and make any stripes or calculations actually, it's even easier than this If you just have a u-shape tube with some fluid, you attach each end to either carb boot and run the bike, you should turn the sync screw until the fluid in the u-shape is level and...

XS400 Seca, running very slow and poor throttle response

bob, your symptoms are those of one cylinder dropping out. This happens when there isn't enough fuel delivered, and especially at high rpms you are sucking a lot of fuel. The mixture also leans out when the bike gets hot, my guess is that that triggers the dropping out. Sounds like carbs. these...
