the crankcase breather tube should be connected. It puts any fumes from the crankcase into the air intake, which is good for the environment (no dirty oily fumes into the atmosphere) and good for the bike; it's basically free fuel and it also keeps everything inside the carbs lubed up a little...

Yes it's possible for the battery to crank the engine, but not produce a good spark. Check the voltage on the battery when full, should be about 12.6 - 12.8 volts. While cranking it shouldn't drop below 12. If you get it running you should have a little higher voltage, in the 13.5- 14.5 V range...

coming from a previous seca owner with similar problems: clean those carbs! and +1 on the filter

the DOHC owner's manual will work for you. The bike in the picture (seca) doesn't look like it, but it is mechanically about 95% the same as your maxim. congrats on the nice new bike :)

Watched this video on carbs by far the best explanation of carbs I've seen ever :eek: wish I would have watched that before buying the xs400

Welcome :) did you watch bcware's videos on the carbs? could still be that you missed a passage somewhere, I know I did on my first few tries.. Did you set the float height? Carb sync? Have you adjusted the valve clearances? How's the compression?

bob, your symptoms are those of one cylinder dropping out. This happens when there isn't enough fuel delivered, and especially at high rpms you are sucking a lot of fuel. The mixture also leans out when the bike gets hot, my guess is that that triggers the dropping out. Sounds like carbs. these...
