Charging Issue - R/R tested, Stator and field coil tested

Like Chrome said, need to make sure you have the right kind of regulator for this bike. Which specific unit did you buy from rick's? Even if it claims to be compatible the problem with these aftermarket regulators is the bikes changed regulator style in the middle of the model run, but none of...

    REG/REC aftermarket option for xs400h 81

Better to get separate units. People seem to have no end to trouble with these aftermarket reg/recs. There are tons of past threads on them if you use the search tool on the top right of the page.

    turn signals don't flash

Could be the flasher relay or the auto-canceller unit. The auto-cancellers are pretty old now and starting to fail.

Brand new to me Xs400 Canadian vin.

It's an 82 but retains the front disk brake from the 81. Generally stick to using info from 1981 though as 1982 also introduced the double overhead cam version which is not the same. The Haynes manual posted at the top of the Garage has a wiring diagram for it.

Re-Ring, Dodge VR and Starter Clutch Springs

I'm sure it had a different part # when I ordered it but I put one of these on my 1982: https://boxermetal.com/products/transpo-adjustable-voltage-regulators-30051a

    XS400 CDI

Looks interesting. Ignitech and PowerArc ignitions can also be programmed for different ignition curves. Microsquirt as well but that's a black hole some never come back from.

    Aprilia Pegaso 650 wire wheels

I've never seen anyone mentioned it so either it has probably never been tried or isn't a straight swap. Almost any wheel swap will require machining of some kind. Almost any wheel can work with enough fabrication. Tracking down the aprilia axle dimensions is a good place to start.

    1980 XS400G electrical revamp

The combination units are hit-or-miss. From 1979+ they are like yours, with one field coil wire going to 12V and one to ground through the regulator. From 1976-1978 they are the opposite, with the regulator "regulating" the 12V supply and the second field coil wire grounded. The ebay listing...

Field Coil wiring question, ground or keyed power?

Not sure about it working one day then not another but the XS360 regulator works by controlling the + supply voltage with the other field coil wire going straight to ground, as opposed to the electronic regulator you posted above where the field coil connects to +12v directly and the other wire...

    hullo

There was also a double overhead cam xs250. None of those parts will be compatible. I believe the XS360 was the first model out, followed almost immediately by the xs250, then the 400 a year later. 360s and early 400s are almost identical. Different camshafts, slightly different BS34 carbs but...

    starter motor

Not familiar with the XS650s but after googling the wishbone gear I am pretty certain our starter systems are completely different. There's the starter motor, a sprocket, a chain, a sprocket and starter clutch on the alternator, which is on the crankshaft. It is pretty common for the starter...

    1979 XS400f wiring issues

The fact that on their website Revival lists all years of xs400s as Type A charging systems makes me wonder about them, since Yamaha changed types around 79/80. Changing the bike from A to B, or vice versa, isn't too difficult. Just need to switch whether the black wire in the regulator...

    xs400SJ Unique Coils?

Yeah, Canada did get an odd SJ model but the coils are the same as the rest of the 80-81 electronic ignition types. I have one of the Canadian SJs. Only really different thing is that they have the disk brakes from an '81.

    upgrade charging system?

Do need a regulator and rectifier. If your unit did both it would have connected to the wires that go to the stock rectifier.

    Don't mind the cracked screen.

Real easy one - size and diameter of the SOHC seat hinge pins?

Crap. Meant to reply to this a while ago. Will look into measuring my seat pins. Yambits in the UK sells reproduction paperwork holders. Shipping isn't cheap but I'm sure you can find more parts to buy from them to make it worthwhile.

    Rear brake master cylinder help

Yeah, the kits are essentially unavailable now. Someone said there was recently one on Ebay for $400 but I didn't bother looking.

What model is this XS400 exactly?

Looks like a double overhead cam Seca. VIN prefix 12E as indicated in the listing pictures. 400cc http://www.xs400.com/threads/history-of-the-yamaha-xs400.4458/#post-46373 German models were often restricted to 27HP because of some licensing laws there. There are some threads about the...
