Having assessed the front brakes on this beast, i have come to the conclusion that everything must be rebuilt or replaced. Is there an updated master cylinder / caliper setup someone can recommend? Or should i just get the kits for my original MC/C, and try to rebuild them? The originals are in such poor condition i don't know if they can even be saved.

Your Bike being an 81 uses the same M/C and caliper as the 77 up XS650. Mike's XS has rebuild kits for them.

Thanks leo, good info. Are you also saying that the entire MC/Caliper is interchangeable?

Mine are in such poor condition, i may just replace them, rather than try to rebuild them. I am finding most EVERYTHING on this bike is in sad shape.

Yes, we of the XS650 crowd often use XS400 calipers to help with the dual disc mod.
Just look at Mike's pics of the XS650 calipers to be sure you use the right parts. Early used a two piston caliper, later used the one piston caliper.
