Hello, new to me 1983 xs400. Runs great so far. Have to jump solenoid to start. Found some cut wires and missing electrical component. Anybody have a idea as what it is?
These can be chased down using the electrical diagram in the manual. What are the exact colors of the two wires? One looks Red with a Yellow or White tracer and the other looks like a Gray.
Safety switch relay. The previous owner bypassed it, likely because one of the safety switches failed. Try to start it without pulling the clutch, if it cranks then that confirms it is indeed the safety switch relay.
iirc the one on the other side is for the turn signals.
Edit: re-read your post - the reason you have to jump the solenoid is because of that switch, or the solenoid is bad or both. If memory serves, the two that have plugs on them are meant to have a jumper wire between them that acts as the bypass. If you put a test jumper wire between those two, that should allow you to use the starter button. Give it a shot, just keep an eye out for any magic smoke.
It may that you have to jump the Red/White and Red/White together to bypass it.
