1985 dohc trike build

I hate to be a demanding dora but could you post a picture of the other side of the sprocket please.

How did you get your aluminum so clean and shinny?

I look forward to seeing your idea on greasing the Diff without filling the whole Diff with grease.

here are 2 more pictures of differential.:thumbsup:The aluminium you ask about is in fact powdercoat chrome colour looks silver gray colour in darker light but does look more like chrome when sun shine's on it if that happens in uk at the moment:mad:differential idea would work but i am dying to get trike finished and it was quite abit more work.Another way to do rear axle and differential which i would do for another trike is to use the differential from a front wheel drive cars gearbox.I will get a picture and download it so you can see that way you can adjust chain tension like normal motorcycle and are able to use any size sprocket to adjust gearing ratio.did you see other pictures of trike in my picture section.

I am looking at that front axle and it seems that you can mount each axle to the swing arm like the other but it also looks like you need a different mount to the swing are to secure the differential box, would you agree?

I am assuming that is what the two square plates mounted each side of the box are for. also some close ups of that axle designs would be nice.

Is it the same sprocket or a different one?

the front wheel design is a great idea and it it does work it will revolutionize trike build for all.

Just grease in this one too?

When you have this mounted on the swing arm post some more pictures.

By the way the powder coat looks great.

I cannot take credit for axle i found it on-line when looking after i started reliant trike axle.look on www.westwalestrikeshack.co.uk that is where it comes from.I looked at making my own one but it worked out cheaper to buy one already made.the side plates are for welding to frame work and then you are able to slid differential back and forth to adjust chain tension it is used more when you are making a hardtailed trike or one with independent suspension you could make framework and still connect to swingarm pivot points.you can use any size sprocket there is alot more choice of amount of teeth on sprocket to adjust gearing ratio than on a reliant axle of most fixed point axles.i will for certain use it for next bigger trike.also no need to worry about greasing as only the bearing's in side plates need to be grease when fitted the same as wheel bearings.you would lube chain as normal motorcycle.hope this is of help.thanks for comment about powder coat i will tell curtis who did it for me.:thumbsup:

I thought of the idea of a small sprocket or two (like a front sprocket) and make a mount that is adjustable that would push down or pull up to tension the chain. I haven't got it all clear yet but I saw something like it once on a chain driven assembly belt at a factory. Kind of like on a ten speed bicycle.
 
here is a picture of one idea a company in the states do i made a tensioner out of a 1inch flat steel bent and a bolt and skateboard wheel so when you screw bolt up it push's wheel up onto chain to tension.

yeah, something like that but only with two small wheels you thread the chain through it and then adjust it up but it keeps the chain straight going into your gear differential so it wont slip off. I don't have a picture drawn of it but I think you can get the idea. with a single wheel lifting the chain will eventually cause the chain to slip off the rear or front sprocket.
 
I was contemplating on the different rear end designs after visiting the link you gave. boy there is a lot to consider. with independent suspension you will have more weight and the 400 may not be strong enough to pull the extra weight. to do so you have to add extra steel frame to the main body frame and the extra steel for the independence or each rear axle.
 
weight is a problem that is the reason i went with reliant axle. plus the axle came with bike so did the wheels so it was silly not to use them.weight not such problem on bigger bike engine.Go with your original ideas and see how it turns out.you don't know till you try the mono shock trike i saw looked good.also in uk if you do a swingarm bolt on conversion you only need to get DVLA to inspect it to make sure no modification to motorcycle main frame to get it registered to a trike.if like i have by going dual shocks and changing bike main frame i have got to MSVA test it and go as Q reg trike.:banghead:
 
the New whales trike shop told me the F10 Diff was good for small trikes. But I wasn't sure if I needed to use it as independent suspension or if it could be used as a two piece axle in a housing. Even though it might be good the main frame addition, and two suspension fraomes would add a great deal of weight.

What do you think could I house that differential and two axle's and mount it to a swing arm?
 
I know most people who use diff like the west wales one use it as independent or as a hardtail which is a fixed frame joined to bike's frame.the advantage of reliant or fixed axle is that you have the diff connected to axle tube's and then the wheel hub's all in one unit,but you are governed what size sprocket you can fit in diff case.you could design a frame to use other type of differential in a swingarm but it would be alot harder to do without a good knowledge of having built trikes before and i still have too much to learn myself before i would attempt to give someone else the wrong kind of information.for the size engine the 400cc has i would do like i have done,but on a bigger engine trike i would go the other type of differential.Sorry if this has not helped.:shrug:
 
no no that is still good info. I have lots of very good mechanic friends with a shop to make things. I can even cast a case if we can make a mold for it.

Hi, Not sure if anyone can offer some knowledge. I have excessive free play in a Robin Reliant axle pinion bearings. The oil seal has given up and requires changing. I'm aware theres a one used sleeve between the bearings. A previous owner said he'd had the diff to bits, and fitted a new seal, it's been driven since then. If I fit another seal and carefully preload the bearings, What's the chances that maybe okay for a few more miles?
