Never attempted doing anything really with bikes outside of add-ons and paint...so here's a thread full of all the mistakes I'm probably making currently and any future failures I may make while having fun with this $500 garage stored 77 xs360

Seller: it has no carbs, we got it when we bought a house, it was in the back of a garage.

I've never had a carbed bike so....

"aLL iT nEeDs Is CaRbS"...sure bud
The kickstart pedal moved...to hell with it.

Stripped the tank exterior, vinegar and baking soda in the tank (thanks google), then did a tank sealer inside that hopefully won't effect things moving forward...had to carve the holes back in for the petcock

Liked the look and feel of the shorty handles so I cut mine and welded them back up and then powder coated them

Thankfully no mice had been in the headlight housing over the years

So this is the first time I've ever removed forks from any bike (credit to all the YouTube videos I watched beforehand and during)

Fitted some clamp on bars and obviously professionally lowered the forks 1.4" (again, YouTube made me do it)

Some bedliner spray on the tubes and I'm just sitting here uploading pics waiting for it to dry.

Ordered a complete carb kit, fuel lines, y-adapter, gas tank dampening bushings, nuts/bolts from Speedmoto...sound like some decent guys over there, that should ship out at the beginning of the week.

Changed oil/filter, fork seals, fork oil, primed the gas tank, lowered the headlight some..

Honestly just hoping there's life when the carbs come in...it'll either be a complete frame restore or I'll ride it til the winter and break it down then.

One big question I have if anyone has any idea .. with a 3.00 front and 3.5 inch rear tire (both factory) can I jump to a 4" wide tire on both wheels?

I've done a lot of stupid stuff. The car is in my lifetime but again this is the first time trying to do something with a bike. Compass

Spent a little time just tidying up things today. Moved the cluster down a couple inches. Rivnuts are currently my favorite.

#whelp I either ruined the seat pan entirely or made it fit the cafe base I have...time will tell lol
Wanting to reuse the stock pan with the stock hinges and locking mechanism. Somebody recommended a Texavina seat so I looked at pictures online and started cutting mine out. Plan on doing a flat bar wrap around under the plastic seat for bracing, threading some holes along the way to mount from the outside, then welding the flat bar to the pan and moving the hinges where they needed to be on the bike.

Ordered wheel bearings for the front and rear, some new drum brakes and probably the wrong size tires today.

The por15 tank sealer was an absolute failure. Cured 36 hours, prepped the tank prior to using the sealer .. followed all of the directions to a T....my plan last night was to go home and paint the tank but that did not happen as I spent most of the evening digging chunks of the tank sealer back out of the tank

Guess we'll do another acetone bath this evening followed by the old battery charger/probe method of removing rust

2nd night of acetone + paint stripper ... over night, almost 24 hours...no change. Last night I spent a good amount of time finding and digging and breaking the chunks up with needle nose pliers and a hot exacto knife. I think I was able to save the tank without cutting it open and I even got the exacto knife blade out that came off.

Jesus...

Did another rinse with the probe and cleaner. Put gas in it to finish off the evening.

I don't think I will ever be using POR15 tank sealer again.

Antique inspection is on Tuesday, the highway patrol officer said that it needs to be as close as stock to possible for the inspection...yeah...about that...

Done a decent amount of work, failed to take pics along the way.

Ordered new levers, broke an old one off in my hand.
Broke the front brake switch.
Getting ready to spray clear on the tank and side covers.
New petcock came in.
Big boy tires/tubes/rim strips arrived.
New fuse panel is in.
Changed my mind on the seat base for the 20th time.
Carbs should be in today so maybe we'll try to start it this weekend? Who knows.

3rd new petcock came in. Will have to trim an inside stem down for it to work.

Paint, over it. Really not a fan of paying as much as I have for 2k clear for it to have a yellowish tint...so now we're just going to call it seafoam green and nicotine stained white.

Carbs in, tried kicking over. No engagement on kick pedal.

With the help of some guys on Facebook I removed the clutch pedal cover and cleaned all of that out last night. Actually felt it go into first gear and back out, then had Kickstarter engagement.
Never played with a carbed anything before so some things were figured out as I went and most of them were fixed with help from the Facebook community.

Was cool to at least hear a thump through the exhaust last night when kicking over.

May put the tank on tonight with fuel on after trimming the petcock stem and see what happens.

And I thought I'd take the night off but instead... So.. clutch cable cover on... In neutral there is no engagement with the Kickstarter... Can shift up but can't find first...
Adjust clutch cable to where the lever springs back and now I can't find gears.

Remove clutch cable cover and with it off the bike I can shift up, back dow

n and find neutral and then there is engagement with the Kickstarter...

Just said to hell with it and tried to start it for 20 minutes last night with no luck
