There's a small black gasket going around the shaft which is leaking a small amount of oil.

And your exact year Yammy is ....... Always helps us to help you when you give proper information. Looks like you are talking about the cam seal. The piece you removed controls the timing for the ignition.

Also, why MULTIPLE posts. Just muddles the situation and makes unnecessary reading for those of us trying to assist you and may irritate some who may choose not to respond.

I can't help you with that but some other folks will chime in.

Yes it is a cam seal. If it is not leaking a lot of oil just leave it alone. To change it you would need to remove the rocker box, not a big deal but still a bit of work. I hope you marked where the pickup coil was when you took it off otherwise to will put your timing off

Side question...is there a gasket/seal for the TCI unit cover??

The bikes with the electronic ignition did not use a gasket for the cover the points ones did. But if you want you could put one there they do make them.
