Hi y'all, I'm having a weird clutch/transmission issue. I've googled around and searched the forum but I haven't seen my issue mentioned before. Basically, the bike seems stuck halfway in gear. She'll start and idle fine in neutral, but she dies immediately in if I shift into gear, and it doesn't matter if I actuate the clutch or not. Also, if I shift into first and then try to start it, clutch in or not, I can feel the starter pushing on the transmission. She'll also roll forward in any gear, but if I roll back about 10" it pushes against the transmission and stops. Before this behaviour started the bike wouldn't roll more than a few inches in either direction in gear. Clutch cable is brand new (the lead came off the lever end on the original one) and the clutch adjustment at the sprocket cover *seems* to be correct, but the way the clutch is behaving makes it hard to be sure. I'm concerned that the clutch rod is damaged in some way but I'm not sure how to check.

Welcome to the forum!

I don't want to be a wise guy here, but i am not sure what exactly you are doing when you describe the behavior, which makes it hard to offer up some advice. For example...

...is the clutch lever pulled in when you are doing this (I think it just be) or is the clutch lever out?

In general it sounds like the clutch is not adjusted properly, the throwout mechanism is bad or that something is amiss with the clutch plates, pressure plate/springs or the shims and washers that provide the proper clearances. It probably would be good to take off the right side cover and look at the clutch pack and the throwout on the other side for any obvious issues. Then re-adjust the throwout clearance at the sprocket cover followed by the lever play using the adjuster at the lever.
