Hi all,

Currently rebuilding an '81 basket case and have noticed that there's play in the crankshaft.

As you can see from the below video, there's movement "forwards" and "backwards" and a pretty good clunk! Up, down and left, right looks good.

Is this something I need to worry about? If so, what's the consensus? Bearings? Crankshaft? Both?!

Thanks!

Sam

Welcome to the forum.

I noticed the same in my 1981. There is no thrust bearing for the crank in this engine and no spec for the allowable end play. Just the same, I put a dial indicator on the end of the crank and got a max end play reading of 0.004" (0.102mm). I put it back together and have been running it that way since. It is hard to tell from the video, but you don't seem to have that much play. If you have a means to measure the play, do it just for peace of mind, otherwise I would just say my bedtime prayers and run with it.

Thanks, CaptChrome. Appreciate the response.
