I just replaced my fork seals on my bike. I was surprised what an easy job it was. These old bikes have the advantage of simplicity over newer bikes. They were made to be serviced by the owner. After I got the seals in, I wanted to make sure I got them in right side up. I was almost positive I did, but decided to understand how they work so I knew for sure. If you look at the picture hopefully you’ll see the 2 saw shaped seals that are obviously directional facing from right to left. That’s what seals the pipe when the shock compresses. The pressure from the compression forces those directional seals against the pipe under tremendous pressure and presto, you’ve sealed the oil in.
