Modern '79 cafe build

Picked up a '79 frame and not sure what year XS400 engine. Plans on this is to give it a dark and sinister look. I was always a fan of how Hookie Co. Evil Crow bike looks.


To get things going, Im in the process of picking an '98 R1 front end. Fork, brakes, rotors, handlebars, etc. Keeping it as simple as possible cause I don't want to be looking for pieces to force them to all work together, so I decided just use the whole front end and keeping the rear stock XS. Already hit up cognomoto to make a custom stem setup.

As for electonics, i want to go as simple as possible. keep it kickstart, and just enough juice for led signals and led headlamp. ive seen some kit that can be an overkill for this project. anyone have any recommendations where else to look?

 

just noticing, its about 1 in difference. damn, thats a lot. ill just stick with the original front wheel.

 

wow, impressive. I got to dig more into this thing. got the bike without a title and only a bill of sale. crossing my fingers that it doesnt give me any problems registering it.

 

I'm just really looking for USD forks. Instead of the R1, I just put in a bid for the Aprilia rs125 front end since I wouldn't need a modified stem.

 

I'll go this route if the company I called can't do it for me. I'm in California and they said they can get it registered with just a bill of sale as long as it isn't stolen. Crossing fingers

Been working and grinding up the frame, noticed that the swing arm hits and stops at the right side of the frame, while the left side of the frame, the swing arm has some clearance. Just wanted to know if this is normal or of it isn't centered. The frame doesn't look to be bent. Also, the swingarm busing seems fine and doesn't move side to side at all.

 

Looking for the stem and wheel bearings for the Aprilia rs125 front end conversion for the original xs400 mag wheels. Any place to get them in the US?

 

I didn't think about that. I'll check it out again. I don't remember it hitting when the shocks were on. I'll make sure though.

 

Made some progress on modding a xs750 tank. Grinded off the ears on the frame and banged up the tail end of the tank to make it wider to fit. Mounting hole centers perfectly after bending it down to be flush.

 

Dude, my Aprilia rs125 forks just came in today and the stem is really short.

 

Careful when ordering a bunch of mixed parts when hunting down these rs125 frontends. The lower brings doesn't clamp on to the for tight enough, and the upper bridge is too small for the fork to even go thru. If planning to do this conversion, buy it as a whole set or make sure you know exactly what you need.
