My build progress so far......

Had no work for the last week,so been practicing my welding!...also,managed to remove the original exhaust studs by welding on some nuts and heating the studs with a MAP GAS blowtorch....worked like a charm.
Got the exhausts finished up and wrapped....
Changed the seat mount for a nicer, slimmer profile one...
Am now toying with the idea of doing away with the seat shock, and making a rigid steel mount from the nose of the seat,so it looks like its floating......
Latest pics...
any thoughts??????:)

yea this is some good stuff :)

Hi Willem.......
Do you know the model number of the Mikuni carbs fitted to our DOHC motors as standard??
I need to replace my diaphragms,as mine are holed.
I've found replacements for the XS400 sohc, but don't know if these are the same?
I can't find any Mikuni model number on my carbs, and don't have a manual as I dont think Haynes did one for the DOHC SECA(at least in the UK)...
Any help you could give would be much appreciated!!!
Cheers
Roger.

replied to your pm before i saw the questions here. Here's so it's searchable for others:

Hi roger,

Mikes xs has them, they are the same as post-1980 SOHC ones: (and xs650 actually)

http://www.mikesxs.net/product/20-6028.html

part number is there as well (3F7-14940-00)

you can get the shop manual and a lot of parts diagrams and stuff from the sticky in the garage!

hope this helps

Brilliant.....cheers Willem:thumbsup:

Hey Sesty.....
Just ordered 2 replacement diaphragms from the link you gave me.:D
They do ship international, and the two, plus shipping to the UK was only $66!!!
This works out about £40,which I can't buy 1 diaphragm in the UK for!!!:yikes:
Thanks again mate, will put some pics up before and after.:wink2:

You'll be happy with those diaphragms, they are way more robust than the OEM ones. If they trust them in aircraft, you know they are plenty good for our bikes!

By the way, this is the coolest looking DOHC build I've seen so far. Congrats.

Cheers Wolfe.....
She's nearly ready for strip down and paint..:D
Have you used these replacement diaphragms,or just know of there reputation??
Just had my carbs ultrasonically cleaned and the diaphragms had 5 holes in each!!
Aside from that, need to replace the float bowl gaskets,as they're shot, and should be good to go....everything else looks good.:wink2:
Will probably have to re jet for the open pipes and bell mouths though!!:yikes:

:thumbsup::bike:

Dodger I'm I'm digging your work here. Thanks for fender advice. I got an old rd type tank so I'm gonna steal that fuel cap idea. That' s one of the reasons I hang out here is to get ideas

Sweet.....that's what it's all about mate....you pick my brains and i'll pick your's!!!:wink2:

Good luck with the fuel cap....it's pretty straight forward...just remember when removing the hinge bracket, the metal is VERY thin in the indent area around the lozenge cap!!
:yikes:
Be great to see some before and after pics....:)

A good day in the workshop today.....
First job, figure out how to mount the bar end mirror I bought without fitting it in the bar end!!!!

Second job,fit the brass exhaust tips I got.I've been after a set of these for ages(anyone following this thread will know I like brass accent pieces!!).They are about $50-60 to buy!!...soooooo.....after a lot of searching I found a site selling brass olives for plumbing,in the exact diameter I needed, bought 5 for £5!!!!!....two on the end of each pipe and job done!!

Then fitted two brass wingnuts, one to each side of the tank side covers, just to finish it off(I have a lot of brass wingnuts on the bike!!):D

Lastly, after getting my carbs back from ultrasonic cleaning, decided to change ALL the phillips head bolts for allen cap bolts. Most of the originals were really chewed or rusty,so I think it was a good hour or so well spent!!:wink2:

I still have to fit the new diaphragms I bought from the US,so seemed like a good time to change the hardware.....

As I am going to be running open pipes with bellmouths on the carbs, any suggestions as to main jet etc. sizes?????

From my thread digging most of these guys suggest up 2 on mains and up one on air to start with. I have got to do this when I get my pipe swap done

You mean the pilot jet:thumbsup: Never change the size of the air jets.
