Hey guys, just got my motorcycle licence recently and bought a 1980 Yamaha XS400 Special in great shape as my first bike, really happy with it. Lots of great resources on these forums, stoked to learn lots from y’all!

'Nucking futhouse' 🤣 Thanks guys, and definitely - I've been exploring the manuals, technical references, and how to's on here tons.
I've been taking her out for long rides exploring side roads around here every day, so far the only fix needed was the idle screw adjustment. What a sweet bike, turns some heads too lol.

Cheers brethren, what province are you from? Thanks man, and they sure are, we have so many fun paved rural roads in interior BC. Here’s some more sweet pics, and the XS400 in your profile pic looks clean as hell too!

I love it here def recommend it! I’m planning a bike trip to the Kootenays next summer, look it up if curious it’s an unreal biking area here. Good luck with the resto process, and yea it should be cheap I pay only $60 a month for my XS400 lol🤘just put it away for winter now sadly tho

60 a month???? my god i dont think I've ever seen such cheap insurance, it probably cost more to insure a lawnmower here in Ontario. guess ill find out once the resto is done :bed:

damn really? if it makes you feel better our rates for cars is where we get nailed lol. and what else do you have left on your resto just figuring out the engine issues?

Hopefully the only thing left is making sure that both coils are sparking instead of only 1. Because of this the bikes at 40-50% of its original power so going from idle to moving is a 50/50 chance of either stalling or moving really slow. Besides that I mean Ive rebuilt the carbs and and the rest seems good to me.

I want to make it a cafe racer but if I try to make it perfect ill be at it all my life

Next few things I want to do after getting it running is to get rear turn signals, get it safetied, get my M2 and start riding it and building it here and there as I go. Change the red to a dark green, titanium wrap the exhaust, get a new seat, and basically all cosmetic stuff

hoping I have the money and the sanity to get it done before next season :bike:

I gotcha, that’s the way to get her going, just narrow down the to do list until she runs healthy. And I’ve learned from my project cars perfection isn’t worth it always shoot for a 8/10 instead 😂.

I like the cafe idea tho, I’ve seen some mean cafe builds out of these! Money can be easier to come by than sanity sometimes lol.. but good luck making her into eye candy!
