Hey everyone,

My name is Travis, I'm 23, ride an SV650 all the time and have just gotten an XS400 as a bit of a project.

It has a DT400 single shock swing arm on it and i am planing on making a cafe racer out of it. (slowly and on a tight budget that is)

First things first is that i need a user manual!?! I tried RepairManualClub.com but it only had the 82+ model and mine is an earlier one.

Here are some pics of the beast!

Crap I downloaded one awhile back but I cant find the link! Try searching XS360-400, I know its out there. I printed it off but didnt save the file! Good luck...

The monoshock swing arm was standard issue in 1982 and 1983 its all XS400 not DT. These aare cool little bikes. This sites gonna be fun - good luck with your build.

The parts diagrams show the mono shock swingarms being made of square tubing... Did they also come with round tube mono shock swingarms?

Mine be square, never saw round before this.

The sohc XS400s had a twin shock rear suspension. Someone put a lot a of work into this, and it sure looks like a DT250/400 swingarm to me. Also looks like they put Seca gauges on it, as well as a host of other Frankensteinian parts. That isn't a bad thing, and I think this is going to be a cool little scooter.

Swingarm is a stock late 70's DT Enduro item. It is the FRAME that has been modified to accept the swingarm.

Hey guys,

As people have pointed out, it is in fact a SOHC, not a DOHC, therefore it DID have the twin shock swinger, but now has a DT (or something) single shock one with an R1 shock.

Turns out the frame is actually from an 81 XS250, which isn't a bad thing, because i'll register it as such and save a little on rego costs. The motor is a 78 400 though, so all is good :D.

I have pulled the whole thing apart and started chopping off bits and pieces. mainly anything that isn't required to hold the engine in place :p

I am going to be lightening the whole thing up quite a bit by removing all that i can.

I have also bought a set of gauges (the right ones) in imac. condition for $75 so i was pretty happy with that.

I'll chuck up some pictures once i actually get something happening.
