Today I received my new points so I removed and rebuilt the contact system in my XS400. Setting it all up using a light bulb to get the contacts to open on LF/RF and I set the opening as per the manual at 0.3-0.4mm and ran it with a timing light to check it was firing LF/RF marks, little adjustment to put it exactly on the marks and now decided to set up the dwell meter across the points.

I measure 44deg on LH and 42deg on RH...with the meter set to two cylinders.

I was kinda expecting more like 100...but its all set up correctly so I will not change it.

Looked in the manual and there is no referance to dwell at all. AI suggests 22deg when read on the four cylinder scale. Has anybody ever put a dwell meter on their machine and actually read it or Y'all just use some feeler gauge at max opening and be done with it...

Those of you that are using points that is...not you new fandangled electronic ignition hethanists.

Now, now, be nice. We all we all worship the same Sparky Sparky at the end of the day.
Its the route to the sparky sparky that makes my sparky sparky better than other sparky sparky's.

mine is more pure, before all the other sparky sparky there was only this type...well there was buzz coils and trembler types but that's really old testament.

(TBH, after working with CDI and Electronic ignition my sparky sparky seems to need viagra but apparently thats how the original was...) I just need to find a babe that understands the importance of purity.

I applaud your virtue.

Clean living and thinking pure thoughts are things of the past for me, but, I do follow the true word. It guides all of my actions and gives me the real torque values. I am speaking of the book handed down directly from Iwata City, Japan - the factory service manual. On the path to understanding Yamaha sparky sparky, I know other people seem to follow the Haynes Manual. Really? It was written in England - pure blasphemy!

Captain Chrome, I admit sometimes to looking in the Haynes manual when the good books let us down. I hope for divine inspiration sometimes where none exists. Neither the blasphemous Haynes nor the Iwata manual could help me on dwell angle for example only points gap, a terrible omission by all accounts.

I just hope guru Kawakami can forgive me when I stray off the true path. My sparky sparky is delivering and arriving at the correct time, its vision is 6mm showing that when the good book is followed a true result is obtained,

The same cannot be said for my mikoni on the left side, a deep dive into the good books is needed.
