Shift Shaft

do you mean the lever which you operate with your foot, or the rod that sticks out of the transmission which is turned by this lever?

If it's just the shifter lever/peg thing (the one your toe touches) you can just take off the clip and slide it off.. If it's the rod I don't know. Ive read about people just bending the shifter peg back with some convincing (something involving a hammer I believe).

If you are talking about what I think you are talking about, I think you have to tear the whole engine town, crack the case and pull out the old shaft (rod) and replace it. Then reassemble the whole motor. Or if your lucky it can be done by just pulling off both engine side covers I cant remember. But once your in there all you need to do is remove one circlip to take out the shaft (rod). All I know for sure is the circlip is on one side, then the rod is simply pulled out the other side.

All you have to do is remove the clutch cover then clutch basket. Then the c-clip at the other end and it slides out.

sorry to post on an old post, but my shift shaft is stripped about and I've been looking on eBay for new ones and they are relatively expensive. I am wondering if anybody knows if the years are similar? I have a special 4R5 engine.

I know this is a longshot and this thread is probably long dead... But I cannot seem to get that rod out. the circlip has been removed, the clutch basket completely removed, and it just does Not pull out of there. The diagram shows there should be nothing else stopping it and it should just slip right through. I'm afraid it might be bent due to previous owner apparently stomping on it to strip the end where the foot lever attaches. Any advice?

Well, at this point you probably don't have much to loose by taking a hammer and tapping on the left end to see if you can get the shaft to move out the right side. If the shaft is really that tweaked, I think opening up the cases is probably warranted as who knows how the selector drum and shift forks look. However, if you can get the shaft out and the other bits of the shift mechanism look in order, putting in a new straight shaft and trying the gear box will tell you a lot before you do anything major.

That's exactly what I ended up doing. I looked at the exploded diagram again, read a few more things that said "it just slides out", decided this was what had to happen, and used a block of wood to dampen a 3# hammer to get it out. There were some shavings that came with it where the circlip groove ran along the guide holes, but it came out after a few whacks. New one indeed slid right in. I can't see a bend, but something was goofy with the old one, apparently. Thanks for the verification. Appreciate y'all.
