I am new to this forum and just recently got my 81 xs400 special. its running alright for now but i have a question about the air filters. it seems that the connection between the carburetor and my air filters does not make a complete connection. ive tried to wiggle them into place. i've even switched them around from one side to the other. it seems to me that either im missing a part or i have the wrong rubber linkage.. i snapped a photo hoping it could help.

Yup, its a very exact science. It looks too me, that the plastic case is not pushed far enough forward, the Air box (H shape hose between Carb/Air filter) Needs to be tightly connected at the Carb, and then airfilter, (when all the trouble shooting is done, not balancing/fine tuning) I dont see the hose clamps or the airfilter hold down bar. It seems to me that once your filter holder is on, you might be able to shimmey it up to the front. With in its grip.

Number 10, is a grommett. I dont honestly remember seeing one on my bike. (its marked as Obsolete)

Now if they would have the part number for the holder, must be in another page. Good luck.

So if you don't have a clamp, get the right one. each pair of clamps are different.

Thanks Tobie. Your right, i dont have the hose clamps or the airfilter hold down bar. also it seems that the part number 10 is exactly what i need to fill the space between the hose and filter. also the hose diameter is larger than the flanges which lead me to the conclusion that i may be missing a part. do you know of an aftermarket solution for this? as far as shimmying the box forward, it is already as far forward as it can go within the frames mounting. i could shave off the forward lip but would that compromise me in any way?

You know that grommet, is probably for the airfilter box to make it suck air only from the other end. So I wouldnt count that grommet being the "Piece you need" Keep your eyes open. perhaps a reseat of the carb. The carb is suppose to sit in the lip of the intake thing on the cylinder head. (in a groove) so if anything been messed with, you could be stretching something very thin. Perhaps the electical wirings are blocking the airbox from sitting further back.

so i kind of did a (very) temporary fix..

it seems to be snug against the hose but i wonder, how important is the hard shell? is this a bad temporary fix? I know i want to re-locate the battery and put in fancy shiny air filters.. so i figgured instead of buying the parts, which i will eventually take out anyway, instead do a quick fix and look ahead at the battery mod. i couldnt get the filter snug up to the hose with the hard shell on, so i just wonder if this is good or bad.. also anybody got a good how-to on the battery re-location?

Nice airbox bracket, um wire that is. In the first pic the airbox housing is sitting inside the battery box nicely as it is meant to. Could be the aftermarket problem mentioned. You will want the grommet(s) (near impossible to find) or what I use at least, o-rings from hardware store. Also will want clamps although from Yamaha very spendy just for clamps. Use the brackets (cheap on ebay).
I do in fact have similar problem but not like that first picture.
The filter element being inside the airbox housing does tend to push inward or even be angled if assembled a certain way. I would first try reassembling then move around and pull the filter reaching inside and see if you can get just enough length to get it attached just inside (if barely) to the air passage "H tubing". And use o-rings at least. The original grommet is grooved to fit in place and would be helpful for keeping filter from pushing inward.

I finally stole some time, and took some photos today, you should be able to see what I was chatting about with the stuff behind the H part of the Air connection tube. There really isn't alot of space between the Rectifier and the crossover from the between zone of the air H tube. I used a ruler, note that I couldn't hold it up on the items, so the distance looks like 8 inches, That is just perspectively, Should be close to that.
Good luck
