I believe the stator is bad or has bad connections in my bike. I was trying to chase a no spark issue and when i was trying a different battery i kicked it over just to see and the neutral light is not lighting up even when im kicking it over pretty fast with no spark plugs threaded in. The lights do work, they light up when i put another battery in it. It is a kick start only bike from 78 so it should run even with no battery right? Was looking around on here to see how to test all that but figured id get some other opinions before digging in.

Anyone at least confirm that i should see my neutral light illuminating when im kick starting it?

Actually i had free time today, went and tested the resistance on each wire, the manual i downloaded said 3 but there were 4 in my plug. 3 of them measured .7-.8 to eachother and 1 measured .4 to any other, so i assume its bad and needs replaced. Kinda sucks i didnt even get to run it this year and that went bad when sitting i guess but eh thats how she goes.

What year is your bike? The pre-1982 SOHC bikes should have only three white wires in the plug and those are the ones to test against each other. 0.7 ohms seems somewhat high, but they are all consistent with each other, so might not be an issue. Another important test would be to measure the resistance from any of the white wires (they are all connected together internally) to ground. You should have infinite resistance - any low reading indicates insulation breakdown and a short to ground.

Should be 1978, ill check resistance to ground tomorrow too. Ill grab a picture of the plug too but its the only one going to that spot and has 4 white wires so idk whats up.

Ok doesn't seem to be grounding out at least. Double checked resistances and getting the same result. Here are the 2 plugs coming from the bottom of the engine area. Im not sure why but my bike definitively got 4 white wires coming out, i dont even have electric start any anything fancy so im just as confused.

Maybe your bike isn't very normal;). I'm pretty sure that my 79 and 81 had three but it's been awhile since I played with an Xs400

Lol ya, honestly might be best for me to just start pulling it apart to see if all the wires even go to the stator. Even the manual says 3 so i got no idea whats goin on ha.

The yellow/black/green/blue plug looks correct, but the four whites in the other plug is definitely a head scratcher. Does the other side of the plug have four also? Maybe trace that side to the rectifier before tearing into the side cover to trace the stator.

Traced it today, so ya wires going to the rectifier are 3 white, 1 red, 1 black. I didnt pull the sheathing apart. I dont see the 4th white going to the back or anything thing by the battery box so if its not just like spliced into another white wire somewhere i assume it goes up front and runs the light or something.

Well i did figure out that 4th white turns into a yellow wire and does indeed go up the the headlight.
