Vroom's 79 Build Thread- scrambler/brat?

Thanks dude! It really was. It was about a 3 hour ride to the entrance of the campsite, then a 3 mile dirt trail to where we camped. I was really impressed with how the bike handled all the ruts and gravel, but the tires def were not up to par for the off-roading. We also ended up running into some areas with soft sand and that got really hairy at times:yikes: We ended up calling it "Fesh Fesh" like the stuff on the Dakar rally
On the way back we crossed through the Everglades which was all dirt trails:bike:

More pics from the camp site!

I like what you've done. I want to trim down that hump too. I took the seat apart, but it seems like the seat pan is humped too. Is yours like that too? I'm wondering if that will be a problem.

Just red thru your whole build thread and what can I say?? I've been thinking of the same type of build. I especially like the front end with the gaitors and the headlight. My tank has been beaten up a bit so I'll remove the badges do a little filling and paint it flat black. Also the seat needs some work but I'm 6'4 240# so I need to keep most of the padding. Is that the stock headlight? I know you changed the mounting ears and shaved all the signals off. Your tracker bars look right at home on that front end. Did you have to shorten the cables? You should be proud.

Thanks guys! Funny enough, the bike is actually in several pieces right now haha! Several updates in the works.

Plenty of pics coming soon :)

Robesteeler: Yes, the my pan was also fairly humped. I just shaved the back part till it was even. The back portion has very little padding, but more than enough to hop on for a quick spin. I'm not planing on having long rides two up anyway.

Mrstubb: Yeap, stock headlight painted black and sitting lower on the forks. I didn't need to shorten the cables. Just routed some them differently and it fit fine.

Update!

So a little while after the pictured trip, the lil XS started blowing some serious white smoke, mostly from the right muffler and also up from the crankcase breather:doh: I checked the oil and it was scary low:yikes:

My first impression was a blown piston ring:banghead:

After a bit of research and some heartache, I decided to tear into it and find out!

Popped off the tank, carbs, pipes, everything that may get in the way

Valve cover pops off and the cam chain is loosened by unbolting the chain sprocket from the cam

Head and cylinder CAN slide out with the motor in the frame...

Kept everything as neat as possible and bagged/labeled every bolt

A local shop was kind enough to let me use their honing tool to hone my cylinders and clean up the pistons

THE VERDICT:
Piston rings were actually fine:doh: It was the head gasket the failed(likely due to overheating and lack of oil:banghead:). That being said, Im happy it wasn't worse.
Also, my wrist pins from both pistons were ground down pretty bad, so I ordered new ones along with new piston ring set(might as well do them too since the engine is open) and a gasket kit.

All the parts should be in this week and putting her back together first chance I get:thumbsup:

PS
I also figured while the engine is apart, might be a good idea to think about paint! Sneak preview

+1 on that rear fender mod! had at it last night, need to cut about an inch more off to get it to sit a bit lower, tighten it down and get the light on it! :D

So I ordered a top end gasket kit from JCWhitney for a 1979 Yamaha XS400... and they send me a gasket kit for an 2004 Honda CRF-50F! :wtf:

I called and the customer service agent actually tried to tell me "it is the right part" , "the computer says so":banghead:

After a bit of explaining, they saw it my way. Full refund, but a wasted week:doh:

On hold now waiting for a parts "specialist"

Let's see how that goes...

Thanks xschris! I was thinking of just doing the top end gaskets. Do I need to do the lower gaskets every time they are removed? Or can I just re-use them with some fresh sealant?

Don't use sealant on any gaskets:doh: Only replace the lower case gaskets if they leak/broken:thumbsup:
