I finally was able to transport my 1978 XS400 from chicago to phoenix and started on the build. I'm redoing all the wiring and trying to diagnose all the electrical components first. The bike seems to have good compression and I'm pretty nice at rebuilding carburetors so I figure the electrical stuff is the biggest priority.
1. The condenser is definitely bad so I was wondering where I could buy a new condenser and if it needs to be stock or if I could just buy a universal one.
2. Same thing with the coils. The primary resistance on both read to be 4 ohms but the secondary on one was around 13k and 22k on the other. Should I replace both coils with universal or just replace the one with 22k secondary with a stock one?
3. I measured the resistance between the 3 white wires and they are all around .8 ohms, does this mean the stator and rectifier are both good? Is there anything else I should test for those?
4. Is there any way to test the voltage regulator when the bike is not running?
5. Is there any way to test the points when the bike is not running? Should I just order new points since the condenser is bad they are probably also bad?
6. Is there a service manual online with the specs for resistances on the electrical components?
Thanks in advance, this is my first ever custom build so have a bit of patience if these are dumb questions
