I have an 81 XS400 Special that has always had intermittent starting issues. Sometimes if the starter slips or doesnt engage properly it makes a rattling or free-spinning sound. I read a whole article on repairing this problem in an XS650 but it looks like the mechanism isnt really similar on the 400's. I took apart the starter clutch and it looks like the pins/springs/rollers are in good condition. I dont see any signs of wear on the gears on the starter motor and the crank. Any ideas out there?
