Help or advice with this 1977 xs400 project's engine?

Cheers philodoxo, Got ignition timing set up there abouts spot on as far as I can tell. My main problem at the moment was that it was running on 250 carbs and not the 400's. had a play today, with the 400 carbs float height set to 26mm now (rather than 31/32 as stated in Haynes) the bike will...

Help or advice with this 1977 xs400 project's engine?

Rite update guy's. Checked compression, got 50 on both sides dry, and 75 both sides wet. Seem to have done worse to it by changing the rings even though the gaps measured better and fitted better in the barrels? Unless my comp tester has packed up on me? Tested with & without choke & with...

Hi, thanks Arclight88. Rebuilds been fun, just a pain when you get stuck with something's. Yea thinking carbs could be the issue as with the RH side not getting enough petrol. Guess its just another strip down and clean again. Thought I had it pretty well sorted when I boiled them as got a...

Help or advice with this 1977 xs400 project's engine?

Hi guy's, Haven't posted in a while, been off doing house upgrades so haven't had much time to play with the bike until today. New standard size piston rings came from the USA, and got them installed and bores slightly honed. Ring gaps and Clearance's are loads better now! Top end then...

Depends which gap you mean? Ring end gap should be 0.15-0.35mm(mine measured 0.50, 0.55 &0.60. Or if you mean piston/cylinder clearance (as in my pic 1 on first lot of pics) then that should be 0.030-0.050 ( but think mine was 0.40 & 0.50 which is well out?)

Hopefully if i've done this right you should have some pics to look at now aswell  pic 1 shows RH piston/cylinder gap pic 3 shows LH cylinder, top a bit mucky but only dirt and where the heats marked the top of the piston stroke. No visible step which would be an easy indication of...

Help or advice with this 1977 xs400 project's engine?

Rite peeps. Got a few spare hours this morning so had a bit of a go with top end strip. Complete top end off, both pistons out and the barrels on the bench. At first glance I cant really see anything wrong with the barrels or pistons, the pistons slip nicely into the barrels and you can feel...

Help or advice with this 1977 xs400 project's engine?

Hi guy's, Had a chance to have a play with the bike this weekend. But just came away more confused? :S Tried the comp test again but kicking it more times, as suggested by 'bcware' (12+ times) Dry test got 25-50, but with a few squirts of oil wet comp test achieved 125ish on both sides. Which...

Thanks for the replys :) Seated the valves in and cleaned them up when stripped engine. But no didn't take rings off piston or check clearances or measurements on the barrels. Will check when I get head off. Bike was on centre stand whilst doing comp test, kicked it probably 3-4 times before...

Hi drewpy, thanks for the quick reply. :) No haven't tried swapping any wiring over yet, only tried putting the other coil lead from right side onto left plug. Bit of difference but not really sure if its right, still not even a cough or splutter tho. Cant remember off the top of my head the...

Hi all, really need some help and advice with this 1977 xs400 project. In advance sorry about the essay, lol :) Its a 1977 x400 kick-start (& electric start converted) and runs off points for the ignition timing. Obtained the bike as a runner out of storage, but was coughing and running a...
