    idle diagnosis

I turned the mix screws out to about 3.75+ turns and the bike starts and idles much better so I ordered 45 pilot jets. I have some 50's, but I'll try the 45's first. I'll post an update when I get the new jets in next week.

Just out of curiosity, what is the conventional wisdom on the limit for backing the mix screw out before you should bump the pilot jet size up? 4 turns out?

    idle diagnosis

Thanks! The tips of the screws were good the last time I had them apart and I'm VERY careful with them so I'm 95% sure they're OK, but I'll check again. Same goes for the diaphragms. I haven't synced my carbs with a manometer so that may be my next step.

Sorry for the late reply, Kinney...I made the seat pan.

    idle diagnosis

All, I've been lurking for a while and got some great help as I started on my bike lsat year, so I need to start with a big THANKS for all of the great info on this site. The bike is running "OK" and I'm riding to work 2-3 times a week. I've slowing, but surely, been tuning everything in, but...

Late 1970's carb float bowl question

So after another attempt (and flashlight and magnifying glass), I saw that there was a small hole. More carb cleaner and a fine wire, as suggested, did the trick. Thanks, xschris!

Late 1970's carb float bowl question

Perfect! Any idea what the diameter of the vertical hole is at the bottom where it meets the 45-degree hole? If it's much smaller at the bottom than the top, it could be that it's just not clean yet. If it's a consistent diameter I can drill it out. Thanks, again, xschris!

Late 1970's carb float bowl question

Does anyone have a photo of your xs400 bs34 carb float bowl I could use for comparison? Does the xs400 bowl have the channel in the gasket surface? What is that for? Based on my recollection, that vents to the top of the bowl via another passage, right?

Late 1970's carb float bowl question

Thanks! I thought it seemed odd when I was cleaning it.

Late 1970's carb float bowl question

I should mention these carbs originally came off a '77 XS750. The only differences I know of (besides having bank of 3 instead of 2) is the jetting. I believe this/these holes I referenced above are part of the choke/enriching circuit, but I'm often wrong... My bike is a '78, but the PO but...

Late 1970's carb float bowl question

Can someone confirm that the small hole inside the float bowl (center of the photo, not the drain plug) and it's mating location under the gasket surface is supposed to be plugged on a late 1970's BS34 carb? I've thoroughly cleaned the passages, but it looks like there's brass plug inside to...

Tail light position opinions wanted (with photos)

The one thing I really like about the light is the brightness. I would say its on par with the stock light. Keeping it as high as possible for visibility is good advice. Thanks!

Tail light position opinions wanted (with photos)

The cylinder behind the seat is for tools, spare plugs, paperwork, etc. In the stock config the tool tray was under the seat. It's an old aluminum welding rod holder and will get polished up at some point. I also need to fashion a latch for it. The mirror is stock, just screwed in form the...

Tail light position opinions wanted (with photos)

Thanks for the input! I sorta wish the light was a bit bigger. I'm on the fence on whether or not if fits the proportions of the rest of the bike's features. Recreateme: The light pivots on the mount, so if I lower it on the fender I can rotate the light up so it's level. Sesty: I trimmed...
