82 XS400 Maxim - Location of Ignition Coils

Thanks All. I took tank, seat, and covers off last night. and Charging the battery up. I'll start testing components this weekend. I sure hope I dont have to yank out those coils. Damn near impossible to access. Evidently the engineer that thought it was a good idea doesn't work on motorcycles...

82 XS400 Maxim - Location of Ignition Coils

LOL, Sorry. I actually posted when I first got the bike. Forgot about that. Once I remove the tank, they should stick out like a sore thumb? Are they hidden under the frame at all? Thx.

82 XS400 Maxim - Location of Ignition Coils

Hi All, First post here. Great forum. Been lurking in the background for a while. Inherited an 82 XS 400 Maxim, Mono-shock. Not getting a spark on the right side. Know that i need to check the ignition coil, pickup coil, and TCI. Where are the ignition coils located? They seem to be up under...

This is probably the nicest 400 Maxim that I have ever seen. Notice I said, "Maxim", the 400 with the mono-shock set-up. This particular set-up can be a challenge to mod. Dude did an awesome job. Found it on Adventure Rider.com.

petcock size for my new alien tank

Size doesn't matter. Well, at least in this case it doesn't. :D Float bowls in the carbs will regulate the amount of fuel, and the vacuum isn't even necessary. Lots of guys have bypassed them.

I'm sorry, but those pics and your story is freakin hilarious. I can't stop laughing. I'm not being a dick, but that is some funny sh!t. I wish I had some spare parts to send you. It's a good thing that your house is not made out of brick.

I didn't want to leave them in the boiling solution too long. I have heard some horror stories. They actually look decent now. We'll see. I am anxious to see if this Mo'Fo' will fire up. I'm still not sure if I'll leave it stock or go the Bobber or Tracker route. I acquired a 72 CB/CL 450 at the...

I boiled the carbs for 20 minutes in a 6:1 mixture of water and lemon juice. I had higher expectations for the results, but it definitely loosened up the crud and varnish. I boiled them outside on my grill. This conconction creates one of the most offensive smells, enough to make you gag. I hit...

Yeah, I started to disassemble them tonight and noticed numerous Orings cracked and/or broken.

Were your carbs gummed up? How did you clean them? Mine are a mess inside. I am thinking about boiling them in lemon juice. I really don't want to disassemble and replace orings, etc.
