As far as running without the air filter, no worries carb wise. They can adjust just fine for any increased air flow. We use to run without air filters with our carbureted VW 1200s. But the dirt coming in required new pistons and cylinders each year. So if you don't mind replacing motor parts...

It is hard to try and read plugs after many miles and idling. They are close enough to not mess around much unless you know what you are doing. DO NOT make any big swings. KISS rule applies .

It is an SOHC, 3 valve per cyl. Twice the weight of the Yamaha with 4.5 times the displacement and 5 times the HP.

Look for some books, maybe at the Library or magazines. I went to school for Automotive Technical students then to 4 years for a BS in Automotive Engineering. So keep working on it. Find an old motor, a air cooled VW bug motor would be good and take it apart. They are very easy to work on...

As Lou wrote he is right about; SOHC vrs DOHC (duel overhead cams). So DOHC have one cam for the intake and one for the exhaust valves. We have one cam actuating both intake and exhaust valves.
