    Spark plugs not sparking.

Another member just had a similar issue, check your kickstand safety switch and relay. If either is bad they can prevent spark, but as already stated it's unlikely you would have power to the plug cables without spark. Unless the plugs are bad or the gap is VERY wrong. Also, when you pull the...

1982 Maxim 400 NO SPARK PLZ HELP dohc

 I didn't even think of that. I even removed mine because my relay was faulty and prevented spark...totally forgot about that. In any case, happy to hear you fixed that issue and can start getting it running again!

1982 Maxim 400 NO SPARK PLZ HELP dohc

Haha, yes drain the oil. Better safe than sorry;) When I first got my bike they had the D8EA plugs and that's what I originally replaced them with. Got it running like that without major issues. I now have the DR8ES-L plugs because I actually read the manual. I can't tell if it made a...

1982 Maxim 400 NO SPARK PLZ HELP dohc

Yes, pickup coil is on the left side. It's a bit of a stretch, but worth an easy shot. To check just remove the cover and see if they're dirty, off calibration or both.

1982 Maxim 400 NO SPARK PLZ HELP dohc

Poor bike, I hope you're able to bring him back. Throwing this out there; have you checked your ignition coils? Also, I'm just assuming it turns over and all that jazz, just no spark? Something odd i had with my bike is to check the pick-up coils. Mine were covered in iron filings and metal...

    Not staying alive

Welcome to the forum fellow DOHC Maxim owner! These bikes are great to work on and learn from. Mine was my very first bike and I bought it "not running". The first time working on any part of the bike is a bit intimidating, but after you've done it once it'll be a cinch the next time (and...

    SR500 19" front wheel on XS400

I ended up using the 500 axle with my 400 wheel. I had to buy different bearings to fit the axle in the wheel, but it rolls smooth without play. As far as the dual disc brakes being heavy I haven't noticed. You definitely have to be a bit more tender with them, but in the few test rides it's...

    SR500 19" front wheel on XS400

I swapped out my forks for 500's so I could have dual disks.

That would have been nice to find when I did mine :laugh2:

Can anybody tell me what this part is?!?!?

I have the same bike/engine, but I can't figure it out either...and I don't really want to tear apart my engine to figure it out ;)

    Front Wheel

You'll probably want to double-check the width of the rim and figure out if you need spacers or not.

    82 starting problem, wiring? Help!

If it doesn't work with the proper wiring then I would start checking all the grounds like Jeff and Mike have stated. I had a bad ground in the rat's nest headlight wiring that stopped my bike from starting. Not sure if that was the main cause, but it my issue was gone after fixing that.

    82 starting problem, wiring? Help!

From your picture it looks like you have the battery grounded to the solenoid. Take that one off the solenoid and ground it to the engine then try starting.

    Bolt missing?

I just checked my engine and it has the same thing. No bolt goes there as far as i know. I've driven over 3000 miles with nothing wrong (until i decided to start customizing).

    SR500 19" front wheel on XS400

If you're thinking of doing the dual disc brakes I followed this link (the xs650.com forums): http://www.xs650.com/threads/fazer-blue-spot-caliper.197/ Very straight forward as long as you have forks fitted for dual discs and such. Even easier if you actually use a CNC machine to make the parts.

    Clutch replacement

Yeah, I made sure to leave some play in the lever. I even did a test run in first to make sure the bike would actually roll back into my garage under it's own power. I also have a 2012 Ninja 650 and it's clutch is very precise and easy to pull. Massive difference between the two bikes!

    Wider Fork / Triple Clamp

Just a heads up. A quick introduction with info about you and your bike would get you a lot more helpful attention. Without at least your bike info we can't help. With that in mind you should probably find a bike that fits that size wheel/tire and measure the steering stem length/diameter...

    Clutch replacement

Ok, so update! I went with the cheapest fix first: clean and lube the cable. Well, as I was removing it I noticed a very tight corner in it (NewHavenMike!) Not pinched, but definitely a sharper curve than should be there. I decided to remove it anyway and clean it up. It was spotless...

    SR500 19" front wheel on XS400

I threw on some sr500 forks and from what I remember they were a direct fit into the triple tree (I have a 1982 xs400j DOHC). As far as wheel, I would guess there would be some changes needed like new wheel bearings. I think the sr500 has a larger diameter axle than the xs400 and possibly a...
