    Where does this washer/spacer go?

i just got all my parts back from powder coat and forgot to bag/label this. Must have come off a wheel or something...? Does anyone know where it goes?

    Regulator/Rectifier Help

I was battling with the same reg/rec from Rick's all weekend. I rebuilt my wiring harness from scratch, referencing the OEM wiring diagram, a simplified wiring diagram and Rick's cheat sheet. Turns out, the 'black' wire in the 5-plug connection actually goes to OEM brown, which is actually a...

    Project - Black and Gold

Man.. It's been awhile since I've worked on the 400. Here's a little update with where it stands currently: This weekend I got busy welding mounting tabs for the CDI unit, the regulator/rectifier, built a battery box and rewired the electrical. The OEM harness was stripped, so I started from...

    Yamaha XS400 Wiring Diagrams

I found this thread over the weekend and it really helped me out with the rewiring of my 400. I stripped everything and used all new 16g marine wire, as well as a Rick's Motorsports regulator/rectifier. This schematic is confirmed to get my bike running, and the battery charging at a steady...

For Sale - 1981 Mag Wheel Setup

Ha! Surprisingly enough, I still have everything. Posted a few times on CL with no success, so they're just sitting in my garage. Let me know if you are still interested.

    Going batteryless / PMA Upgrade

The original plan was to paint it, but it would be a shame to cover up the awesome metal work. If anything, I will probably add small, upholstered knee pads to the tank indents, and maybe pinstripe or paint a line down dead center, then clear coat. Haven't decided yet... I do like the look of...

    Going batteryless / PMA Upgrade

Whoa. Thanks man! That's definitely what I was going for when I started to build it. I've built 6 bikes the rough way, and wanted to challenge myself with this build to do things the RIGHT way (i.e. no rattle can black and zip ties )

    Going batteryless / PMA Upgrade

I completely removed the starter motor and the gears from the engine, as well as all the wires and rebuild the wiring harness from scratch, so the electric start isn't even an option. :wink2: As with yours, my bike would probably start if I farted or sneezed towards the kickstart lever, with...

    Going batteryless / PMA Upgrade

Over two years with no issues sounds pretty reliable to me! Since I am only running an LED headlight and tail light, I'm sure it will be enough. I just hope it doesn't OVER charge, even with a newer RR from Oregon Motorcycle Parts. I think I'll give it a shot.. Looks like it will fit perfectly...

    Project - Black and Gold

Here are a couple color photos as it sits in my shop right now... I still have a loooong way to go. Waiting for it to get a little warmer in my shop before I really get moving on it. Once I figure out a battery solution, weld on mounting tabs for the CDA and RR, it's final teardown time...

    Project - Black and Gold

Cut and weld. It was actually pretty easy! I've heard horror stories about the cast metal of the kick start arm either melting or not holding a weld. My little 120v Hobart welder handled it just fine.

    Project - Black and Gold

I'm in Seattle, WA. All my sheet metal work was done by Joe Cooper of CooperSmithing Co. World Champion bike builder, and one of the best sheetmetal/fabricators I know. In total, I spent $1,000 on the sheetmetal work, including the tank, rear cowl, seat pan and upholstery mold. The amount of...

    Going batteryless / PMA Upgrade

No reason you can't have both, which is why I posed the question in the first place :wink2:

    Going batteryless / PMA Upgrade

I have a 4-cell Anti-Gravity battery running it now... Or should I say HAD. I've heard multiple times that our old bikes' charging systems don't get along with LiIon batteries at all, leading me to believe that my Anti-Gravity battery is completely fried. After the CDI, reg/rec, wires and...

    '81 Budget Build

SHOOT! I was hoping you could figure out what to do to get the Hugh's PMA ignition to work. I'm also trying to go battery less on my bobber. I talked to BJ at Penton Racing, and he said he doesn't have a system to work for our 400s, but might be interested in making a setup in the near future...

    Going batteryless / PMA Upgrade

I think I may have just found something... The Power Dynamo ignition system from Penton Racing makes a pretty good setup. Fitment and compatibility are still up in the air, but I just contacted them and will let you all know what I find out. Twin cylinder systems are $550. Kinda steep, but if...

    Going batteryless / PMA Upgrade

I like to think I am the king of Google, but I just can't seem to find ANY info on any modifications to the charging system for our XS400s. Yes, I have seen the post from madpressdog about taking a Banshee rotor and fitting it, but his thread doesn't really do a good job at explaining the...

    Project - Black and Gold

You'd be surprised, but it's actually a pretty comfortable ride for being a bobber! I've gone on a 200+ mile ride with no problems, aches or pains. I gave him creative freedom when I dropped it off, and the knee dents he put in the tank really help hug the bike. I might go back to some riser...

What did you do with your XS today?

This weekend, I picked up my XS400 from my sheet metal guy. Custom gas tank and tail section. Insane work...

    Project - Black and Gold

Alright... It's been a looong time since I posted an update. I ended up picking up a couple more bikes, selling a couple, but in the background, my XS400 has been making some progress. This past weekend, I went and picked it up from my sheet metal guy. Custom gas tank and tail section...
