    Chain makes snapping noise

Thanks for the spec. Now to decide about an o-ring chain or a standard. Anyone use an o-ring chain?

    Chain makes snapping noise

Ok things to do: Get new chain. Maybe I'll modify the sprocket to sprocket ratio too...

    Chain makes snapping noise

Hit my buddy in the back shoulder, flew ahead and slid 50 meters. He was running no chain guard. Other than that I would imagine it could lock up the front sprocket, or even the rear wheel while riding. Although unlikely, it's pretty dangerous

    Chain makes snapping noise

Just to clarify... I flipped the entire chain, not just a link. I assume the chain is now in the original directionof travel because I did not notice any issue before initial removal. Only after first install

    Chain makes snapping noise

I took some time and played around with the chain. Modified alignment and tension, and I was always noticing a spot in the chain where it would hang up on the front sprocket. I marked the defective link with a scratch, and removed the chain. I thought working it back and forth with some lube...

    XS400.com t-shirts?

Nice job fellas. I like the makeshift Yamaha logo and the carb shot. Can we use both? How bout the logo for the sleeve, and carb for the front? If the saying wasn't geared towards the experts, it might appeal more towards ppl who get help from the site rather than give it. Something like "I can...

yea i going for 1/4" slack when the chain is the tightest. That's another wierd thing.... the tightest spot in the chain is not when the snapping occurs

    Chain makes snapping noise

Oh yea? Maybe i'll just do that to be safe. Pretty nasty ramifications if she decides to snap while cruising. :yikes: I'm still stuck wondering what caused this - considering if was fine before removal :umm:

    Chain makes snapping noise

Hey all. I recently finished rebuilding my engine with success and took her for a ride aprx 15 miles. Things seamed alright except i noticed the chain was quite a bit loose. Chain tension was correct before, I suppose it took a ride for everything to seat. I tightened it up ('bout 1.5 turns...

    Oh that wacky idle!!

I just solved the same symptoms with my rejet - the mixture screws needed backing off. I'm at 4 turns out now. +1 Hough! Yes the idle is spec'd at 1200 rpm and should remain consistent after reaching operating temp. The idle speed screw should be the last adjustment after carb synching and...

New rings produce scraping sound - crank turned by hand

I took another look at it last night, and I just don't know what I was concerned about. When I turn the crank, the pistons and rings sound fine. They seem a little tight, but that is expected. The rings must not have seated properly and made me think something was wrong. After sitting overnight...

New rings produce scraping sound - crank turned by hand

Thanks for suggestions. I may have trapped a ring when inserting the pistons into the bore. Pistons are oriented correctly, timing chain was not hooked up when I heard the scraping. Sounds like my scenerio is not normal, and will have to dissasemble again to diagnois. Do i need to replace the...

New rings produce scraping sound - crank turned by hand

yes oil was used to lube rings and cylinder walls. I used my finger to disperse the oil across the entire length of the cylinder. I did use a buddy's honing tool, so the manufactures X-hatch is no longer there.

New rings produce scraping sound - crank turned by hand

Hello all, long time reader, first time poster here. I have used this site to guide me thru a rebuild project, and can't tell you how many tips i've stolen and branded as my own.:) So I'm finally buttoning her up after a top end rebuild - new rings, lapped valves, new rubber, and gaskets...
