Bike dies when clutch is released

Yeah it idles great, but didn't sputter much when the clutch was let out. It was more like a fade in power. I recently lapped the valves, and I just adjusted the clearances. The bike is running at its best since I've had it. It responds to the throttle well when idling, and even with lots of...

Bike dies when clutch is released

Jmd_forest, it dies letting the clutch out. It didn't die when I let the clutch out on the stand, but it dies with both wheels down. And Lupe, it does stop fairly easily with my foot, thanks.

Bike dies when clutch is released

So it's running on both cylinders and the wheel definitely spins in first gear when it's up on the stand. It also spins in neutral, which I don't know if that's normal or not.

Bike dies when clutch is released

I finally got my 1980 XS400 running well, but now when I shift into first gear and release the clutch, it dies no matter how much throttle I give it. Any suggestions?

Contact breaker gap on 1980 XS400

My manual has the installation for the contact breaker type, that's why I'm asking.

    Starting and idle problems

Although the valves are giving me trouble, I was able to clean up the piston heads pretty well today.

    Starting and idle problems

It's looking better already. I cleaned a lot off the outside of the valves but now I'm stuck trying to get them off. I have a spring compressor but it's only grabbing the outer spring and not the inner one. Is there a trick to this?

    Starting and idle problems

I finally got around to removing the head this weekend. I did the leak test on the valves and sure enough, fuel leaked past them. I only did this with the intake valves but I'm assuming they all need work. I'll attach a few pics. You should be able to see where the fuel leaked out.

    Starting and idle problems

I haven't taken the head off yet, but the camshaft cover is off and I've noticed a lot of oil in there. That's not normal is it?

    Starting and idle problems

I didn't try the wet compression test, although that probably would have been easier. I've already started to take the head off. I found some good videos on lapping. Is there anything specific to these bikes that would also help? By the way drewpy, your bike looks awesome!

    Starting and idle problems

So after the head comes off, is there something specific I should look for, or is it something that will stand out?

    Starting and idle problems

Compression test with WOT results: Left-105psi, Right 130psi. Is there a way to check for valve seat leaks?

    Starting and idle problems

I didn't do it with WOT drewpy. Should I have?

    Starting and idle problems

So I finally did a compression test; 110psi on the left and 140 on the right. Could this be leaky heads? The rpms seem to jump up and the throttle seems to be delayed. Float height is around 26mm.

Contact breaker gap on 1980 XS400

Hey everyone. I was looking at the manual for checking the contact breaker gap and how to adjust it if necessary. The pictures and description don't match what I have. Mine only have two screws. Does anybody know what the measurements are for these and how to adjust them?

    Starting and idle problems

Good call Drewcifer. I've been meaning to get my hands on one of those. The bike only has 3500 miles, but has been sitting for at least a year. I know that's a major thing to check when getting a bike going after awhile.
