Thanks for the link to your thread Lou, I definitely have some great fudge brownies in there. I'll look better next time I get in there (and clear away the chocolate ganache), but it seems that the casing got a scratch but no actual perforation.
Thanks for the good eye Willem, I see now the...
ok, took the countershaft cover off and got a good look at the jam. The sprockets actually look
like they might have survived, check out the pics, yea the nuts took a beating though. I have a leak from my left Carb and possibly also an oil leak that might have been...
Having trouble figuring out the chain and sprockets I should order. I've got the '82 owners manual from a thread on here, and the Hayes workshop manual for XS250, 360, 400 '75-84. Again, I'm on an '83 maxim as far as I know. The '82 owners manual says 50 HDSS with 102 links with 30mm slack...
I have been hypothesizing if this happened on the highway what the damage would be (as I cross myself). Thanks Dave, gonna see what's doin tomorrow. Tell you what I find.
1983 SOHC Maxim
I'm making a left turn from stopped at a light. I start rolling in first and shift to second right before getting into the turn. I hear clinking and then ka-clunk as I'm letting out the clutch, maybe I was a little quick letting it out, but not much.
I hear a rattling...
Thanks guys, you've given me some great places to start. I've got my voltmeter coming so that should help with some of the component troubleshooting. I'll let you know how it goes when I find some work time!
Hey guys been here for a year, but still in the newbie range (I'm wrenchy but could use suggestions for a book that breaks down motorcycle mechanics and maintenance?).
My '83 XS400 has a few issues I need to look into, but most pressing right now is electrical. I've recently noticed that...
Yes to terminal tips still on! So after getting NGK plugs and returning one of the Champions I bought, I discovered to unscrew the terminal tips, BUT the NGKs wouldn't screw in at all! Too big! So back to Oreilly Auto parts for the third time to get the Champion I just returned.
But...
So my bike, 83 maxim, didn't start the other day. I had a few problems starting previous and now it just quit. Might need to charge the battery, but I noticed a curious thing while checking her over: both of my spark plugs are cracked in half. Don't know how or where the other halves may have...
Hey folks, I'm still pretty new to being a motorcycle owner (got my 1983 Maxim XS400 for $575 a couple months ago). I've changed the oil and oil-filter, tried to install a fuel filter (it ended up breaking, I lost a tank of gas; the angle was wrong, I'll try again), I've recharged the battery...
Hey Petei, I've been referred to this post by Lou Ranger, I've got an '83 Maxim so it should be pretty compatible. Question: What gauge tubing did you get to put in with the filter?
Thanks! Laters,
Great! Tomorrow I'm planning to do an oil change, get a new oil filter, look into a fuel filter.
UPDATE: I did have a backfire a day or two ago, stalled while idling, some minor trouble starting. And once while riding I lost thrust and decelerated even while throttling up. This resolved on...
Awesome! Thanks so much Lou. I have noticed a little bit of clunking into gears, but I'll hold off until I'm sure it's not just me getting used to the clutch ;) I'll let you know how it all goes!
PS: My Aunt loved the show so I always use Mannix when its not already taken :)
Hey folks, I am an absolute beginner so do not think you will insult my intelligence by being super clear; I bought a 1983 Yamaha XS400 Maxim 3days ago. The first time I rode a bike was 4days ago, so you see what we're working with. I've always wanted a bike, for gas efficiency, enhancing my...
Did you ever figure how to make the seat less cramped? I'm 5'11" and just wish I had maybe some additional pegs to stretch out on once in awhile. Does that exist? This is my first bike/ first time even on a bike!
