    Newbie with a vibration issue?

I took it to a local motorcycle shop and the guy gave it a quick check/test and said that there is nothing wrong. I told him the whole story even talked about this thread. He said it sounds great, looks great and that's just how these bikes are. Sorry guys I guess im just really not used to...

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

Trust me its not that I don't want to do it or that i'm too scared to do a little engine work. School is starting back up for me and this tinkering would be too great of a distraction from my school work so I have no choice but to put it on hold until a winter/spring/summer break. Maybe i'll do...

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

Yeah that is where I am getting the play information from. Unfortunately, I am just not going to have the time to go through the engine until next spring/summer. Thanks for all the help guys.

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

Thanks for the reply. So looking at the bike from behind it wiggles left to right (I guess that means washer missing. It may just be my imagination but there might be a very very slight front to back play. Do you think this can cause such a bad vibration?

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

So I have a little play in the flywheel (big gear attached to clutch basket) is that normal? This is without the clutch pulled in.

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

If I took off the exhaust would I be able to reuse the copper gasket (they are new from the last time I had the exhasts off (I really wish I rembered if it still vibrated from then)). Unfortunately I don't really have the time to take on an engine rebuild:( the most I can probably do is take off...

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

Yeh unfortunately it vibrates on, even while in neutral. What I meant as an imbalance was more of a loose gear or something, that would wobble and therefore cause a vibration. Wouldn't the H pipe help equalize any pressure differentials? I gave it a compression test and both cylinders came right...

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

Thanks for the reply Lou but after a bit of research (mainly this website http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/yamaha/yamaha_xs400%2077.htm) I've concluded that the SOHC engine does not have a balance shaft.

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

Alright time for another update. So I got the new ignition module and I swapped it in. Unfortunately, the timing did not change but after a little research I found that the pickup coil can be rotated slightly to change the timing. After a little coil adjusting I was able to get the timing...

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

That's an interesting idea but there is one on ebay guaranteed to work for $70 with a 14 day return policy so I'll just give it a day of checking/testing and if it doesn't change anything back to the post office it goes:)

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

Quick little update: I decided that I would just recheck all the ignition system components just to be extra sure. I started off by checking the ignition coils. The ignition coils' resistance came up well within spec so I went on to check the pickup coil. I first checked the pickup coils...

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

@VGTIDave I will check my tci module today but I think I'm just gonna buy one and return it if it doesn't help. I see a nice one one ebay for a 1981 but I have a 1980. Their ID #s are 12-02 (1980) and 12-02C (1981). Whats the deal with the "C"?

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

@lou ranger I was under the impression that the rotor bolt is the bolt that holds the pickup coil to the engine:shrug: @16VGTIDave that's exactly right but how am I supposed to verify if its the right one?

I guess first I'll examine the pick up coil tomorrow. Thanks again for the help.

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

Interesting info (I will take a better look at it) but it seems that I forgot to mention that at 1200RPM it is lined up with the LF mark its when I rev it between 2K-3K that its off, for the manual says it should have a 36-40 degree advance but it needs 53 degrees saying that the timing is off...

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

@arfstrom here is the one I got seems to be a nice one for a pretty good price. Nice bright light with the advanced timing control I have no real qualms about it. http://www.harborfreight.com/timing-light-with-advance-40963.html @lou ranger yeh i'm with you on the that. Paper towel sifting =...

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

Sorry for the confusion. Lou, I wasn't only following your advice I just started doing engine diagnostics with your suggestion first (checking the timing). About the timing, I was simply following the manuals instructions on checking the timing (not changing it) dynamically using a stroboscobe...

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

Interesting news everyone! After taking some of lou's advice I went out and bought a timing light from HF (with advanced timing control). I started on the left side and at idle its perfectly at the LF line but then when I rev between 2k-3k I have to advance the timing to about 52 degrees (an...
