Thanks for the reply. So looking at the bike from behind it wiggles left to right (I guess that means washer missing. It may just be my imagination but there might be a very very slight front to back play. Do you think this can cause such a bad vibration?

So I have a little play in the flywheel (big gear attached to clutch basket) is that normal? This is without the clutch pulled in.

If I took off the exhaust would I be able to reuse the copper gasket (they are new from the last time I had the exhasts off (I really wish I rembered if it still vibrated from then)). Yeh unfortunately it vibrates on, even while in neutral. What I meant as an imbalance was more of a loose gear or something, that would wobble and therefore cause a vibration. Wouldn't the H pipe help equalize any pressure differentials? I gave it a compression test and both cylinders came right...

Thanks for the reply Lou but after a bit of research (mainly this website http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/yamaha/yamaha_xs400%2077.htm) I've concluded that the SOHC engine does not have a balance shaft.

Alright time for another update. So I got the new ignition module and I swapped it in. Unfortunately, the timing did not change but after a little research I found that the pickup coil can be rotated slightly to change the timing. After a little coil adjusting I was able to get the timing...

That's an interesting idea but there is one on ebay guaranteed to work for $70 with a 14 day return policy so I'll just give it a day of checking/testing and if it doesn't change anything back to the post office it goes:)

Quick little update: I decided that I would just recheck all the ignition system components just to be extra sure. I started off by checking the ignition coils. The ignition coils' resistance came up well within spec so I went on to check the pickup coil. I first checked the pickup coils...

@VGTIDave I will check my tci module today but I think I'm just gonna buy one and return it if it doesn't help. I see a nice one one ebay for a 1981 but I have a 1980. Their ID #s are 12-02 (1980) and 12-02C (1981). Whats the deal with the "C"?

@lou ranger I was under the impression that the rotor bolt is the bolt that holds the pickup coil to the engine:shrug: @16VGTIDave that's exactly right but how am I supposed to verify if its the right one?

Interesting info (I will take a better look at it) but it seems that I forgot to mention that at 1200RPM it is lined up with the LF mark its when I rev it between 2K-3K that its off, for the manual says it should have a 36-40 degree advance but it needs 53 degrees saying that the timing is off...
