Is there a sound difference or performance advantage to having a 2into1 vs. dual straight pipes?

I have run several scenarios on my XS650(close enough to an XS400) over the years. I have run a set of drags as well as a 2-1 open and a 2-1 with muffler. The drags were the loudest and performed the worst. The open 2-1 was quieter and did not have the flat spot the open drags had. The muffled 2-1 was the quietest and performed the best with no flat spots, and seems to have a better bottom end...

My favorite setup was a 2-1 with a shorty reverse taper megaphone...Sounded good, bike ran great(carbs were jetted to match the exhaust and air filters)

Thanks for the info. I like the look of the drag pipes and the ease of fabbing some up, but I think I will build a 2-1 set-up.
