Can i kick start the 400 without batt?

Yep, Drewpy is right. The battery in an XS400 is always needed to make the spark whether you have a starter or not.

As above, you need a battery for a running XS400. Now, if you go kick only, you can get a smaller battery as you're not needing all those amps to spin the engine over.

The only way to go without a battery is to convert to a permanent magnet alternator setup. I think there's a write up about using an alternator from a Polaris in the XS400??

I remember old cars maybe points system you connected the posts and push start. maybe only works on old points system

Why do you see xs400 bobbers with no battery?

EDIT: thought i saw xs400 bobbers.. my bad.

has to do with alternator/stator i guess... maybe stators with a spark coil is they key.

Either they completely redesigned the electrical system or, more often, they used a much smaller battery and hid it someplace else.
