If your going to use K&N filters these are what you need. http://www.xs400.com/threads/vintage-k-n-rc-130-xs360-and-xs400-air-filters.16466/ If you must run the bike without it's H-pipe intake and go directly on the carbs use uni foam filters. 54mm are the size of the mouth. Read up on air filter setups for these bikes as going farther from stock will greatly effect its performance.

thanks! new to being a mechanic. when you say it affects performance, what exactly would i notice it affecting?

sweet. thanks again! also, the bike i bought, he had an antigravity battery installed. i went and had the battery checked and its dead. wondering, by having that battery, does there need to be any additional things installed for recharging it, or should it just naturally charge from the alternator?
It needs a rectifier and a regulator. Look up the wiring diagram for your model bike and look it over. If your bike has been all hacked up you will need to go over everything to make sure it will be safe and functional.
