Steering head swap? swing arm pivot bolt safe?

Howdy HoughMade. I hope that my comment didn't come off as disparaging. I'm 30, and my education and upbringing were completely impractical. Soooo impractical. I was taught how to think, but never was shown how to do a darn thing. I've had to teach myself how to do everything from...

Steering head swap? swing arm pivot bolt safe?

Hey drewpy. thx. that welding trick is a great idea. I'm gunna have to acquire welding materials sooner or later. I'll play whack-a-mole with the top plug and see what happens. Was it cheaper to have the fork tubes reamed than to get new ones? I guess I'm surprised by that.

Steering head swap? swing arm pivot bolt safe?

and in addition to my question, will a steering head (which takes 35 mm fork tubes) from an xs650 fit into the frame of an xs400? edit: and the big life stuff? I moved to a new apartment. Got a new job. And found out that my wife and I have another kid on the way. sheeeshh. Life is good...

Steering head swap? swing arm pivot bolt safe?

Hi y'all. I was here for awhile, then I wasn't. Some big life stuff that made me forget motorcycles for awhile. But I am back. Got a 1979 xs400 which I rode to work for two years. I'm a newbie mechanic who is really finding pleasure in learning. I decided to take the bike down to it's bits...

    refurbing disc brakes

Tonup Pm me. I'm interested in the rotor, depending on the price of shipping. I'm in Wisconsin, so the shipping might make it more feasible for me to look for one here.

    refurbing disc brakes

I guess it wasn't the aesthetic of the drilled discs that I was going after, but performance. But I hear you about the old rotors not being engineered for it. I guess I should just take them to somebody and get them resurfaced and then save up for the new rotors/calipers. TONUP, you said...

    refurbing disc brakes

I see several OEM rotors on ebay and I might go that route...but my fear is that when they come in the mail they'll be just as grooved as what I already have. I don't want to have the attitude where I just throw money at the problem, but it seems that if I go with some aftermarket rotor then...

    refurbing disc brakes

Newbie working on my first bike, 79 xs400, and looking at the discs, they're grooved (and mildly rusty) so I'm going to have to do something about that. The groves are quite visible, but they don't feel that bad and I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to renovate them myself w/o paying...

    i hate my XS

Oh....dont say that...but I understand. Ouch. If you really have to rebuild and rewire that is a big project. I just built a new wiring harness. I'm a newbie so don't take my advice as gospel but here's what I did. My method worked very well. I found the appropriate wiring diagram...

wire harness rebuild--newbie intro-- and a question

hmusket. Muy interesante. I'm going to study the german diagram and get back to you. **It** sounds like you're on to something. I too hate unsolved questions. thx

wire harness rebuild--newbie intro-- and a question

Well, it's a dead end. The wire goes into the harness clip, but the start switch/kill switch assembly half of the clip has no connection for it. Like I mentioned above. PLUS :banghead::banghead::banghead: I've already noted that this set up is recorded in the factory wiring diagram.
