How to upgrade ignition to Dyna Coils 3.0

Hey XSLeo, Thanks for your response... I converted my bike a while back to electronic ignition. I think mostly I swapped in a 81 XS400 engine I had lying around (instead of converting my 1978 engine directly to electric), and did some minor wiring harness changes to make it work and used the...

How to upgrade ignition to Dyna Coils 3.0

Hey all, I have been letting my 1978 XS400 sit for a couple years and thought I need to get it up and running before the weather turns too cold :). It probably already runs (will find out soon when I get my new battery), but I do like to give myself a little project each year to upgrade the...

    The Crimson Revenger!!!

Nice, mind if you take a pic or two on the setup or final clutch lever you drill out for others to see what to do if it ends up working great :)?

    The Crimson Revenger!!!

It got tightened enough that it stays in relatively, but I get a couple drops of oil leaking a night. I been busy and haven't ridden it since then but I'll probably have a chance 2 weeks from now (after vacation) to see how much it drips on a hot engine. Cool, let me know how it works out. I...

Float Level measure with 'tube tool'

Rob: I would assume 1, otherwise the seller would say you need to buy 2 and make 2x profit :). My carbs were at different levels since the gas level in each carb is operated independently by each separate float. Thanks everyone, I'll try setting each carb soon. PS i assume pushing the float's...

Float Level measure with 'tube tool'

oh mine is a 1978 XS400E, which is a SOHC (not DOHC). I just assumed I could use the 'tube tool' on it. Technically why couldn't you use that tool? Doesn't it serve the same purpose in measuring where the gas would get stopped by the float? Im wondering if I can use it still on the SOHC Mikuni...

Float Level measure with 'tube tool'

I've always measured float level with my electric caliper correctly based on reading many threads here (making sure to measure it from the inside of the carb where the gasket is placed as recommended here ), but I thought I'd grab this tool I saw a couple others on the forums got or made to see...

    The Crimson Revenger!!!

I will add one more problem. The oil drain bolt turned without torque wrench clicking. I was like crap, the plug or threads are stripped. I took out the oil drain bolt and saw the threads inside the engine are a bit iffy. Like pushing the threads with a toothpick moved some of them heh. Im...

    The Crimson Revenger!!!

In summary btw i saw this info in another thread: Rotella T6 full syn 5W40 If you replaced all the gaskets and seals, and cleaned the internals well, then synthetic would be the way to go. Rotella T triple protection 15or10W-40 If you decide to go with dino oil, change it and the filter...

    The Crimson Revenger!!!

Btw I have new clutch plates in there that are within spec and the springs were in spec (I replaced the old ones couple years ago thinking it was a clutch plate issue, but when i opened the bike to put the new clutch plates in, i measured the old ones and they were within spec too hehe). plus my...

    The Crimson Revenger!!!

The ride was good for the 1st ride of season. I saw gas was leaking very slowing from the botom of one carb drain bowl. I think the right carb that has a copper washer at the bottom of the bowl is fine. But the left one, has a washer I bought that might have been the official Yamaha one that...

    Cafe Front Fender

So i see some nice cafe fenders on Benjie's Cafe Racer website: http://www.benjiescaferacer.com/fender-covers.php But he said those are mostly for Hondas and XS650 and he wasnt sure they'd fit a XS400. Anyone know a nice blacked out and simple/short cafe fender like that, which fits our...

    Carb clamps for engine

so I noticed the carb clamps on the engine side (not the airbox side), are thicker and the carb mounting rubbers has a lil indentation space to fit a nice thicker clamp. I bought these from MikesXS, they work, but they are too thin so would like to replace. 2 x Band Clamp - BS34 Carb Holders...

    Jet advice

The old stock pilot jet helped get the bike back into riding mode. Will tune/jet the carbs when the weather gets warmer next spring :). -Ari
