From what i can see you'll need a rear sproket (the gear) about 20 bucks and a chain adjuster the little chrome piece with the bolt going threw it on the end of the swing arm also 20 bucks. You can get both on ebay.

I beat a friends harly 1340 with a screaming eagle kit in a 0 -60 drag race. beat him 3 times. Haha he was so mad... Good ol four hundow.:poke:

Rode around a little bit with a co worker before we went to work. I've put on over 6000 miles on the 400 after the winter rebuild and its running strong nock on wood.

The chain will work but the sprocket will not. you need a sprocket for a 81 or older xs400. not the 82 and later 400 maxim there not the same. As far as the ride id just stop every hour or two to let the bike cool down.
