1982 XS400 DOHC camshafts spin directly in the head! WTF?

Thanks & sorry Dave, hehe , had a pretty stressful day myself... Well that sucks.... I have a spare low mileage head here, just figured I could throw it on and get another year or three, but if the entire engine is designed to wear out that low it wouldn't be worth the effort. If I ever saw a...

1982 XS400 DOHC camshafts spin directly in the head! WTF?

Dave, why the condescending tone? I admitted I didnt know what I'm doing, and my first impression is that it should have babbits over the cams, because I've only ever seen steel-on-steel cam 'friction surfaces'.. I've had them apart, I've seen the steel inserts in my aluminum 22R head. I was...

1982 XS400 DOHC camshafts spin directly in the head! WTF?

Scorpio, my thoughts exactly. Thanks. :) Chris, you're just basically telling me I'm fucked... Not really helping. Every vehicle I've owned but one was something that someone else said was unfixable, and I put about 500,000 on every japanese car/truck engine I've ever owned before they...

1982 XS400 DOHC camshafts spin directly in the head! WTF?

I recently found out that the cams on the DOHC sit directly in the aluminum head. That just seems like a huge wear problem waiting to happen. It sure has on mine... Finally took a good look. There's so much wear that the cams rattle around in there... In thinking now that the initial...

How many miles on your xs?

42,000km when I got it 3 years ago. Got up to 72,000 km's and my odometer's broken now so this is my last mileage entry.. It's getting gutless and shaky (cams/valves) but still starts and runs ok. 30,000km in 2 summers and so far this year... Call me ironbutt, lol Edit: Runs a lot better now...

Vibration is driving me insane... guess my vibration?

Well, the bad news is the parts engine was a dud. The good news is I know the sound of an XS400 DOHC knock... The original is back in, along with a non-holey header... Well it still hasn't blown up... And hadn't had the actual knock since one of the first starts this spring. I can tell that...

So I guess swapping another timing chain in with a master link would be bad?

Hey Willem, here's a picture of my monoshock adjustment tool: They call them "channel lock pliers" here, but I thought a picture would be better, lol

I understand it now,but theres something I dont know

Hey scorpio, try googling something called "Foxit Reader". It's a MUCH smaller, faster (free) PDF reader. (Adobe reader sucks, lol...haven't used it for years.) It should work on your comp, so you could read or print out the PDF manual.

Stripped down most of a parts bike. Got it's shiny engine sitting on a pallet now... Just trying to work up the nerve to TEAR THE HEART out of my (badly) running Seca, lol

DOHC oil filter that includes O-rings (Canada)

I hear that not all filters include the o-rings, so here's a pic of the box from the one I recently bought. It included the large cover ring, as well as the small one for the bolt.
