    1980 XS400 Wont rev out past 4k

Gotcha. I did check it with a timing light and it's dead on LF at idle but I haven't checked it at different RPMs yet to check the advance. Got the neutral and oil pressure lights hooked up today but haven't had a chance to start it since.

    1980 XS400 Wont rev out past 4k

Hello! I've got a 1980 xs400 that I'm almost done with but I took it for its maiden voyage today and it won't rev past like 4000 rpm. Carbs are clean using stock jetting and air boxes with new filters and everything. I'm wondering if it's not an ignition issue. It seems to only have trouble...

    Wrong cylinder firing

Agreed. If your plug wires are long enough, you can just run them to the opposite sides just as an easy way to test it out. No shame in it, I've gotten them backwards many times. Also, cam timing could be off by quite a bit. Or at worst you could have a shredded woodruff key in the fly wheel but...

    1979 SX 400 electric start

I agree with CaptChrome. Does it click when the button is pushed? If not, check the 2 small wires going to the solonoid with a multimeter. You should be getting about 12 volts with the button pushed. If you are, try jumping the solonoid with a screw driver. Do NOT touch the frame while doing...

Did i just ruin this swing arm? 1980 Yamaha XS400

Hey guys, I'm building a scrambler out of an XS400. Almost done but the rear tire (5.10 x 18) was rubbing the inside of the swing arm. Initially it looked like just some of the weld was all that needed to be removed. No luck. So I kept shaving away till I got the clearance I was looking for. I...

    1980 XS400 Chain Rubbing

Also, I can get plenty of movement out of it, I can still push the bike around the shop and spin the rear tire off the ground with the o ring chain, so it's not rubbing so much I can't move it, but it's just enough to get me a bit worried. Not quite sure what the right move is. Thanks guys!

    1980 XS400 Chain Rubbing

Hey guys! I've got a 1980 XS400 that I'm almost done building for my brother. This thing was the perfect candidate for a scrambler build so that's exactly what I did. DOT knobbies, 15 in rear shocks, xs360 front spoke/disc rim, single 2into1 exhaust, all that. Looks good and runs good, but...

    Carburetors shooting flames!

The weird thing is, this isn't my first rodeo! I've rebuild a good bit of motors (Honda CL350, YZ426F, JR50, Kawasaki Bayou 220 and 300, and I'm sure I'm missing some), the timing marks on the cam gear just don't look very level to me. They look like they're 1 tooth back. I was honestly afraid...

    Carburetors shooting flames!

She's a runner! Moved the cam back 2 teeth (1 tooth from where it was originally) and it fired right up! Wow I took the long way around on that one. Such a simple bike giving so much headache 🤣. Thanks for your help!

    Carburetors shooting flames!

I might take a few pics and show you what I mean. The bottom screw is in the way of the big black box part rotating any further forward.

    Carburetors shooting flames!

Yeah I only turn the engine over to the left or to the front of the bike and away from the tensioner. I'm using the LT on the flywheel and the two horizontal lines on the cam with the arrow kinda thing pointing up. Also, the cam lobes on the left side are facing down. It looked more like the...

    Carburetors shooting flames!

No luck tonight. It backfired pretty good a handful of times but no start. Is it possible the part that holds the gear could've skipped and is now out of time with itself? I can't even get the ignition set to a point that lines up all that great without re-setting the cam back about 2 teeth past...
