Bent clutch push rod - Worn out housing

Hi folks, I've posted about this issue in someone else's thread but was thinking it might deserve its own. I own an XS400 L Maxim 1984. I've been living with a manageable oil leak for the past 6000 miles, until I decided to investigate it. The leak is coming from the clutch push rod seal, what...

Oil leak from clutch rod. Help!!

Alright, so good news is I managed to take out the seal with the screw technique, thanks for the tips @tstidham  Bad news is I got to see what's behind the seal. The pushrod is clearly bended and it has been eating the housing while functioning. Look at how worn out it is in the...

Oil leak from clutch rod. Help!!

Thanks! I'll try this technique and share the results. Any tip on how to get the pushrod out without pushing it from the other side? My bike has the 1 piece rod + ball bearing (instead of the ball -rod -ball - rod assembly line from older models ).

Oil leak from clutch rod. Help!!

Hey I happen to have the exact same problem on my 1983 Maxim. Here's a video I recorded with the issue. You can see how it's leaking oil, plus the rod seems to be bended slightly, doesn't it? Or is that wobble effect coming from a worn out seal? I've been trying to pull out the push rod without...

Oil leak from stator wire grommet!!

Hey @mikevar94 , did you manage to solve the leak from the clutch push rod? My 84’ Maxim seems to be leaking from the same area, and have no clue where to start the job. Here is a picture of the leaking spot. Oil seems to be coming down the stator wires Any tip would be appreciated, thanks

    Crankcase, and Engine Mount removal

Hey @nasiraod, same issue with the lift. How did you finally lift the bike or support the engine when removing upper mounts? I’m going through the same exact deal, would really appreciate your experience on this. @16VGTIDave do you also have any tips for this? Not sure what would be the best...

1980 Yamaha XS 400 Café Racer // M-Unit Basic Conversion Wiring Diagram

I’m also interested @KylesCafe . Did your diagram work? It looks pretty solid. I’m also trying to follow Revival’s diagram, but their Starter solenoid have 6 wires compared to mine having 4 only. Would appreciate some advice and learnings from your build.

Lift / stand / lift table advice DOHC

Thanks for your thoughts @amc49 . True that the space is a bit limited, but I still believe it's possible. Actually the exact available length is 220cm (87 inches), and I could also get rid of one of the tables on the picture, what would give me an extra 50cm (106 inches in total). Bike length...

Lift / stand / lift table advice DOHC

Thanks for the advice @spectra , but there is an issue with the images you posted, I can't see them. Indeed a lift table might be the best, but not sure if it would fit my limited space. Thanks @Ron Cate , that sounds good to me, can you please share some pictures or a link where I could get...

Lift / stand / lift table advice DOHC

Hey fellas, I’m planning to do some work on the bike for the first time during the winter. Mostly maintenance, some electric fixes and some upgrades on the handlebar controls. I have a little storage room to work on the bike and the next step is to buy something to lift the bike to work...

My build so far. Fender question as well.

Hey Killjoy33, would be nice to see how you got the shorty front fender sorted out. I'm planning on setting up one on my '88 maxim. Any suggestions or advice on where to find one? Thanks in advance

1st post: Let me introduce myself

By the way... Could you guys help me to correctly identify the specific model of the bike? All I know is it's a 1988 XS400 L, but I'm having a hard time finding documentation about this model both in the forum or Google (OEM manual, wiring diagram). I want to start working on the wiring...

1st post: Let me introduce myself

Thank you Specdog. Very good points, tidying up the wiring is the first thing I’ll be doing, yeah the handlebar hardness can be minimalized a lot. Didn’t pay attention to the fork boots until you mentioned, but its true they look super compressed when standing still.o_O Thanks for the link too...

1st post: Let me introduce myself

Hi everybody, I hope you are all good and safe. After reading you guys for some weeks, I’m more than happy to announce that I just bought a 1988 XS400 L. It Was conserved stock until the previous owner transformed it into a cafe racer 3 years ago. He found himself not riding it often enough...
