    No Power above 4000/5000 rpm

Hi, Thanks for the reply. The carbs are sync'd and seem to be ok. I will check the fuel filter. How do I check the fuel filter and what is a plug chop? I check the plugs and one cylinder seemed fine and the other seemed to be running a little rich. Mark.

    No Power above 4000/5000 rpm

Hi, I am not sure if anyone can help but I am extremely frustrated :banghead: because I cannot seem to fix this recurring problem with my Yamaha xs400D 1977. The problem is that I have no power above 4000/5000 rpm. When I open up the throttle the bike nearly goes backwards and I get uneven...

    Tire Recommendations

Update on the tires. Those Avons grip really well and very predictable. Managed to scrap the footrests and exhaust when I was riding in West Virginia this weekend. So I definitely recommend the Avon Roadriders!!!!

Buying a bike, no title but seller is working with me to get one.

Bcware is right that registering bike's without titles varies between states. In NJ I believe that you need a bill of sale that has been notarized.

    Poor performance above 4,700 rpm

Before dismantling the carb, I decided to give the bike one more chance to behave and took it out for a ride. You know what it ran fairly well without a flat spot. So I have decided to employ the old saying, "if ain't broke don't fix it". So I will see how things progress over the next week. I...

    Poor performance above 4,700 rpm

By the way, when I pull of the vacuum tube to the petcock when in Idle the Engine stops dead. Is this normal or is a clue to the problem? Mark.

    Poor performance above 4,700 rpm

Hi, I think that you are right. I going to put back on the original pipes and see how the bike performs. If this smooths out the acceleration then I will proceed with experimenting with the carbs. Thanks for the help, Mark.

    Poor performance above 4,700 rpm

Is this the reference you are referring too. I would guess that the needle jet needs to be cleaned would be my guess from reading the guy's description. Mark. http://www.dansmc.com/carbs2.htm

    Poor performance above 4,700 rpm

Hi, Well the bike is back in one piece and running. The bike runs really well below 4,700 rpm but once you get above 4,700 rpm the engine runs rough and the engine loses power. However once you get about 5,800 the engine picks up again. I should also mention that it takes a while for the bike...

    What Gasoline should I use?

Hi, Thank you very much for the advice and guidance. I am not sure where we should add this to the website but I think we should add a FAQ or How to section especially for new owners of xs400s. For example, my question related to fuel would be a great FAQ for newbies like me!!!! Any just...

    What Gasoline should I use?

Thanks for the tip. Premium it shall be. No need for any additives to replace the lead?

    What Gasoline should I use?

Hi, I know that this must be one of the most stupid questions of all time but what grade of gasoline should my 1977 xs400D use? The manual says regular, light leaded fuel. Does this mean that an additive needs to be added to regular unleaded gas? After many months of rebuilding my...

    Rear Master Cylinder Refurbishment Kit

Hi, Many thanks for the brake advice - you saved the day!!!!! I decided to just do a google on brake caliper paint. I found this company called G2 USA that does a kit to paint brake calipers (www.g2usa.com). I will give this a go and see whether it works well. I agree that the only permanent...
