Thanks. Yes still trying to work out what mufflers to use. The originals are rusted through. I have short mufflers I purchased but I don't think they're going to fit nicely with the kick start and kickstand.

Just circling back here for anyone who comes across this thread. I drilled out the slug until I got down to the internal screw and popped off the cover from the 1980 xs400. I then swapped out the ignition and plugged everything from the 1980 harness back. Started third kick.

Thanks I just wanted to know if I was getting into something that was never going to work. What's the best way to get the tamperproof slug out?

Would it be better to swap the 1980 electronic ignition into the 77, or buy the PAMCO?

Ok - so the 77 uses points, the 80 is electronic. So I need to install this? http://xs400ignition.com on the 77 engine to work. Anyone installed one - can't tell from that site how it works with the 1980 harness. I've read this thread - Just can't tell from it how to wire it to the current...
