Could transmission fluid be used as assembly lube?

It ran when it was parked, havent tried to get er goin yet since I have another project on the go already. It does turn over fine though.

I did think it was an 81 but I never had confirmation. At least other people think so too.

Oh man, i didn't expect this many replies. I got the number from the frame and engine. I'm not sure if it's SOHC or DOHC, I would look but its up at my cottage. Here's a couple pictures of it to help out.

I've got an XS400 with the VIN Number 4t4-00XXXX can't find any info on what year this is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
