hi yall im doing some maintenance and performance upgrades on my 1982 xs400 maxim and found the air filter is very dirty. Its the square type oem. having trouble finding an air filter for it. only place i found so far is ebay. is there anywhere else that sells the oem style filters? or even make performance oem filters. If not thinking about going to pods i already have upgraded exhaust and was planning on a re-jet anyways, i know to stay away from emgos whats a good brand that i could go with dont mind spending a little extra to get the good ones. any help would be awesome thanks.:bike:

Get a stock filter, they are still available. Or spend the $ and get a K&N filter. DO NOT GET PODS! Pods require more maintenance, good ones are just as expensive as a K&N, you will have to rejet, and the kicker - they are ridiculously LOUD. Open exhaust loud. This is fun and cool for a while, then it becomes a harmful annoyance. I forgot my earplugs yesterday and rode 400+ km with only my helmet for hearing protection. My ears are still ringing 12 hours later.

If you choose pods, you will have to decide if you are willing to wear ear plugs to protect your hearing or risk hearing damage.

ok thanks i finally found a uni air filter oem style so im going with that one. also i see you have 17 sprocket up front with a 34 in the rear how do you like the setup how does it perform

I took a filter for an xj650 (still being used on it) and removed the paper and then replaced it with foam. DIY reusable foam filter.

I'm going to switch to 17 x 36 or so when this chain is worn out. I feel the RPM's are just a bit too low. I find that steep hills or passing require a downshift to be executed safely. I never carry a passenger, so I'll live with it for now. I want to keep the 17 front sprocket to keep the chain wear minimized.
